The US Constitution was written in 1787, and a group of papers called the Federalist Papers and Anti-Federalist Papers proceeded to examine the issue in detail thru Jan 1788. New York met in June, 1788 to vote on New York's acceptance of the US Constitution. Henry Livingston's brother Gilbert voted for ratification, even though it had been assumed he would vote against it. This page includes deep details on the NY Constitutional Convention of 1788, with the text of the Anti-Federalist papers. The "The Ifs of History" book suggests that the US Constitution might not have been approved if Gilbert Livingston had stayed with his original position.

KEYWORDS: constitution; newyork; ratification; usconstitution
The points that the Anti-Federalists argued in 1788 are still relevant today. The main achievement of the Anti-Federalists was the agreement on the part of the Federalists to amend the Constitution with a Bill of Rights.
The some 15,000 pages of the Henry Livingston website go into some depth on New York history, as well as the authorship of "Night Before Christmas."

New York also gets special mention in regards to voting for Independence.
Only state to not vote for it.
To its credit, it didn’t vote against either.

All of these state ratifying conventions would make great audiobooks.
