He has to deal with this in a very public way, and is doing so with great class and dignity.

I’m 65. At this stage in my life, if I get cancer, one of three thins will happen:
1. Natural methods will cure me.
2. I’ll die
3. I’ll be miraculously cured.

Regarding number 3, my wife and I already have two miraculous healings.

I hope the treatment will help. Aggressive treatment is the best in such situations.

He should call Ginsburg and find out her secret.

doesn’t sound good- i think the type he has is pancreatic cancer- He talked about it awhile back, and said he realizes he is very very fortunate to be able to pay the super high prices for care he’s getting- You could tell he was very appreciative of the fact he was blessed enough to pay-

Tough to deal with no matter the amount of money- Hope he can beat it-

I was never particularly fond of Alex but he has gone way up in my eyes. He really is being a class guy.

I am afraid the end is near.

What it is

Cachexia (kak-ex-ee-a) comes from the Greek word kakos meaning bad and hexis meaning condition. Anorexia just means loss of appetite and is often associated with cachexia, but not always.

Cachexia is more than simply loss of appetite though. It is a very complex problem and involves changes in the way your body normally uses protein, carbohydrate, and fat. It leads to many problems including muscle wasting.

Cachexia is very different to general weight loss. It can’t be completely reversed even if you feel like eating.

Trying to eat more or being fed through a tube may not help reverse it either. People suffering from cachexia do not seem to feel hungry.
What happens with cachexia

We don’t know exactly what happens in cachexia. Scientists think that the cancer releases chemicals into the blood that contributes to the loss of fat and muscle.

These chemicals may make your metabolism speed up so that you use up calories faster. Because your body is using up energy faster than it is getting it, you can have severe weight loss even if you are eating normally.

The trouble with cancer is that when the doctors say you are now “cancer-free”, that is only true until it comes back. I hope Alex’s next round of chemo is successful.

They didn’t do surgery. And stage 4 survival is very rare. I wondered about this when he came back to the show with celebration and fanfare.

I would encourage him to get nicotinamide riboside:

The inverse relationship between NAD+ and cancer awakened the curiosity of the researchers: could an increase in NAD+ have beneficial effects on the disease? When the scientists supplemented the diet in genetically modified mice with nicotinamide riboside, a derivative of vitamin B3 that increases intracellular levels of NAD+, they did not observe tumour development. Surprisingly, when they gave this diet to mice that had already developed the disease, the size of the tumours was reduced and they eventually disappeared.

The results have been reproduced in other types of cancer such as pancreatic cancer. “We observed the same results in mice with pancreatic adenocarcinoma with regards to DNA damage, so we could conclude that this treatment is effective on tumours caused by oncogene-induced DNA damage and thus, deficit in NAD+,” says Krishna Tummala, first author of the study.

In addition to working with the mouse model, the authors have collated the results of nearly a hundred human samples. “Those from patients with HCC contain URI levels that double those of healthy samples,” according to the article. The data, which also associates URI with a worse prognosis or evolution of the illness, suggests that the gene could be a possible new HCC marker, and nicotinamide riboside boosting NAD+ levels may have a human relevance.

Why is RBG the only one who can sail through pancreatic cancer? Or is she?

The problem with pancreatic cancer is the symptoms are usually not noticeable until late in the progress of the disease. Once it reaches stage 4 and spreads to other organs it’s a very small survival window.

I hope someday there’s a test developed to recognize the early stages when it’s much more curable.

Yikes, sad to say, the prognosis is poor with this chemotherapy. It might have been effective for a short period of time, but then the cancer somehow mutates and becomes resistant to the chemo.

If anyone here has some kind of contact with Alex or his circle, PLEASE mention Stereotactic Radiosurgery as his only possible hope. Hopefully he can be flown to NYC where he can be seen and treated by Dr. Gil Lederman and associates at Radiosurgery New York. This does not involve surgery, just pinpoint beams of special radiation aimed directly at the tumor. They have had phenominal success with metastatic pancreatic Ca. Their web site is rsny.org and their phone number is 1-212-CHOICES.
