Canal boat owner accidentally left locks open causing £3m worth of damage
Telegraph ^ | 7/9/2018

A canal boat user accidentally drained 200-year-old waterway - causing £3m worth of damage - after leaving locks open. Water ended up gushing down the Shropshire Union Canal, washing away the banks and leaving a huge gaping hole in the waterway.

Trees along the canal were torn from their roots, hundreds of fish died

The affected stretch had to be closed, meaning boats could not travel along that bit of the canal.

About 15 boats were stranded and more than 10,000 fish were rescued, but many more died when they were washed on to dry land.

I’m sure he didn’t do it on porpoise. Probably just slipped his mind; we can’t all be brain sturgeons.

You can find a much better series called Great Canal Journeys which shows lifelong narrowboat travelers Timothy West and Prunella Scales traveling canals throughout the UK, Europe and the world. They are both actors but Prunella Scales is most famous as Sybil, the wife of Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) in Fawlty Towers.

Even at the beginning Prunella was experiencing early signs of dementia and after a couple of seasons she had to admit that she could no longer remember the names of her own children. By the later series both were mostly passengers. The thing that is relevant to this story is that they would show Prunella messing up things she was supposed to be doing to get the boat through the locks. It may have looked cute at the time but how many people who aren't famous television personalities doing the same thing without being filmed?

“This event happened in March 2018......”

This internet we have is polluted with outdated stuff everywhere. Nobody or no outfit cleaning it up.

No apparent tools allowing for search results within a recent timeframe.

I find I’m not particularly fond of the narrator/boat owner in Travels by Narrowboat, he seems to be really full of himself. But the scenery is very pleasant in an English understated way and the thunk-thunk of his boat’s motor is calming after a busy day of retirement. Apparently there are loads of narrowboat videos out there. I knew it was a thing, but had no idea how big a thing it is.

“The canal lies in the counties of Staffordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire in the north-west English Midlands. “

Just in case anyone else was wondering where in hell this happened!

I’ve watched a few videos of a guy who “magnet fishes” the canals . The Brits use the canals as a dumping ground. Bikes, safes, guns, motorcycles, shopping carts, all sorts of scrap.

Apparently there are loads of narrowboat videos out there.

It's very popular in the UK and Europe. Many of the canals there were abandoned then restored by private organizations. That was one of the main themes of Great Canal Journeys, where Timothy and Prunella would talk about how the canal was rescued. There is even a show called Celebrity 5 Go Barging where over the hill celebs try and make themselves relevant again by going on a canal boat trip. It is also a popular destination for people who want a different type of vacation and there are many boats available for charter.

Not clear how this could have happened since:

1. When a lock is used, there is no time at which both gates are open, and then is always too much water pressure on at least one of the gates for it to be opened.

2. You could drain water out of the upper river by leaving open the valves at both ends. But it's not clear how this could have caused so much erosion in the lower river since the water flow should not be much more than when the lock is drained normally.

There’s a series on Amazon Prime “Travels by Narrowboat” that shows what it’s like to travel throughout England by narrowboat. Some of it was recorded on Shropshire Union Canal.

It’s pretty boring but the scenery along the canals in pretty nice for the most part. England has preserved their 18th-19th century canals and they are still in use. I have to think having watched dozens of passages through locks, that leaving them open was deliberate sabotage, likely done late at night.

I had that playing with the sound off while I exercise for a diversion.

Neighborhood fish fry!

They can now clean the garbage from the bottom of the river in the drained area.

There are volumes of canal boat videos on youtube, often labeled “narrow boat”.

The narrow boats are like floating RV’s and the owners often have only minimal water skills. Some of the vids are very comedic.

People with boats in the canal have haddock nough of this.

The boat owner probably feels eel.

They need to do a root canal analysis.

From the article:

It happened in March but the huge bill has only just been revealed after an investigation by the Canal and River Trust.
