The mayor of Boston announced Monday that every kindergartener in the citys public school system will receive a savings account, complete with a starting $50 balance this fall at beginning of the school year.
Mayor Marty Walsh said Boston Saves, a pilot program which has benefited about a dozen schools since 2016, is slated to reach all Boston public schools by Fall 2019. The city will then take steps to expand the program to charter schools. The initiative aims to increase college and career access by supporting low income families in saving and planning for their childrens future.
Every child deserves to hear the message We believe in you and you can do anything from the first minute they walk through our school doors, Boston Public Schools Superintendent Brenda Cassellius said in an online video message. I encourage every family whose child is entering kindergarten this year to participate so they can take advantage of all of the wonderful benefits of the program.

Next thing they will bitch about is “Income Inequality.”
Why should millionaires get ANYTHING???????? They don’t DESERVE it!!!!
I wouldn’t be surprised if they required each kid to sign a pledge to vote (D) in 13 years, in order to get the $$.
50 years ago we got savings bonds as awards for scholastic accomplishments, in the child's name.
What would really turn this little give back/kick back goofery into a learning experience would be to announce on the last school day of the year that every kid who has more than $50.01 in their savings account will have their money doubled.
Totalitarianism never sleeps.
50 bucks a kid times 30 kids per class is 1500 bucks per classroom.... that buys a hell of a lot of paper, pencils, crayons, etc.
This will get interesting. There are a little of 54K students yearly, just in the public sector. And they are considering to further this stipend to private school. That’s a quarter of a billion dollars just to start.
People in the area are already asking the right questions:
What about the rest of the state, did the taxpayers in rest of MA pay for this, what about OUR children????
Boston is a “sanctuary city” how many illegal’s children are getting this perk over legitimate citizens?
Free money available in Boston. Have more kids, fast...
The source of the money is not a great idea. Taking from taxpayers to give to others (with a cut going to city workers) is never a great idea.
80% will be seized by the kids parent or guardian upon graduation...
Their first lesson is putting their hand out for free stuff.
How about getting taxpayer permission to take their money and give it to others?
We cannot expect the Americans to jump from capitalism to communism. But we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of socialism until they suddenly awake to find they have communism. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, 1959

Seems the people of MA are not real pleased with this. They should have asked them first with a vote. Then if they want to be patsies, it was their choice.

Wrong on every level.
1- teaches them they don’t have to earn money
2- creates opportunity for parents to steal it
3- taking tax payer money without at least a referendum
4- illegals get this money too I’m sure (if not more)
Of that I have NO doubt.
In the past, Pizza Hut had a program to try to encourage kids to learn how to read and if they met their goal, they got a small personal pan pizza.
So many parents were taking the pizza and eating it themselves, they finally passed a rule that you had to eat the pizza in the restaurant and the KID had to eat it.
Any lowlife that would steal his own kids pizza will not hesitate to steal their savings account.
Answer...YOU!!
FMCDH(BITS)
what about 1st graders, 2nd, 3rd....
That’s a month worth of lunches.
Pretty sure accounts cannot be set up with a minor as the sole account owner, which means either parents or somebody else will be able to access these funds.
Are those families locked down in Boston? Must they remain in Boston until the kindergartners are grown up?
If there are safeguards to keep the money from being withdrawn until the child is 18, it’s a nice gesture but the cynic in me says the motivation is to make sure the kids stay on the socialist plantation as long as possible.
My oldest did that program. I think it was called “Book It”.
If they’re smart (hahahahahahaha), they’ll give each kid a $50 savings bond. If they give them cash it’ll disappear pronto.
The $50 bucks will be seen as a bonus to their food stamps.
Corollary: Kid answers “four bottles” and still gets an award for scoring last place on the math team.
Went to my granddaughters awards day....600 awards. Never went again.
That was the title of the program.
My kids did it too but they actually got to eat the pizza they earned.
