The Search For The “Gay Gene”

When this report first came out last week I didn’t feel tempted to write about it, but it did lead to a lengthy and interesting discussion with some friends on social media. It involves the release of the results of a study conducted in Great Britain and the United States that’s being billed as the biggest study ever conducted on genetics and same-sex attraction. I’ll have to confess… I was kind of shocked at the conclusions. But long story short, while some possible correlations were noted, they concluded that there is no single “gay gene” that determines your sexual orientation. (NBC News)
The largest study to date on genetics and same-sex sexual behavior was published last week, and it concluded something many queer people have been saying for a long time: Sexual orientation is complicated and cant be explained away by a single gay gene.
This takeaway pushes back on what seemed like a resolute determination among earlier scientists to show sexual orientation is a product simply of biology, while it also backs up millions of us whove discussed our varied experiences regarding our sexualities. And it helps clarify where the priorities of LGBTQ people should be in fighting for civil rights in the political and legal arenas.
Sexual orientation is complicated and cant be explained away by a single gay gene.
The author goes on to offer a number of arguments as to why this study should never have been published, many of which have been around for ages and are worth consideration. Gays and lesbians have long been concerned over the possible discovery of the mythical gay gene because that information could be misused in the wrong hands. What if someone wanted to push the research in another direction and develop a “cure?” Or would parents begin prenatal screening and start aborting gay babies? Prior to recent changes in policy, there were suggestions the military might start screening blood tests of recruits and rejecting those that “failed the straight test.”
Much of my surprise was no doubt due to my highly limited, layman’s understanding of genetics. For some reason, I had always assumed that there would be some sort of definitive gay gene or genes. After all, there seem to be specific genes dictating every aspect of our makeup that we look at. There are genes that determine whether individuals find the taste of a particular food or spice pleasant, bitter and awful, or they detect no taste at all. There are genes that seem to predict whether you will prefer coffee or tea. Why wouldn’t something so fundamental as your sexual orientation be driven by something hiding in your double helix?
But then I was reminded by some of the people I was chatting with of some other factors to consider. One of the biggest was the idea that, aside from random mutations in each generation, genes are passed down from parents to children. The elephant in the room here should be obvious. How would a gene be passed down if its primary function was to make you vastly less likely to engage in the activities required to produce children? Good question.
In the end, will any of this matter? I highly doubt it. People are just people, straight, gay or in between. And while we have mapped the human genome, precisely what all of those tiny strands are up to will probably remain a mystery for a long time to come. In fact, most researchers appear to believe that most genes don’t “act alone” for any particular result, with the outcome depending on combinations of multiple genes. And some “turn on” or “turn off” at various points in our lives, so the picture is constantly shifting. So I’m not drawing any conclusions here. I just find the science behind it fascinating.

Didn’t William Buckley call Gore a homosexualist since that was the basis by which he defined his whole life?

Just my nonscientific theory - one possibility is that gayness happens much like imprinting (baby chick and its mother). That's what I think too. There's a time in one's life, in childhood, when some experience can flip a switch in them. Needn't be an abusive experience, just whatever can be perceived in terms of sexuality, and usually is something obviously sexual or gender-related. At some time in life the mind is ready to absorb it and incline toward it or against it, and a preference is set.

How on Earth could there be a “gay gene?” How would it be passed down to the next generation? Even if until the last 50 years or so these people were “in the closet” and had a hetero marriage, if there was even a 1% lower reproduction rate among gays (as in for every 100 births to actual hetero couples there were only 99 to couples in which 1 or both were gay), over the course of 100 generations (roughly 2500 years) the number of people carrying these genes would decline by about 63%, and after 5000 years would decline by about 86.5%. In other words, even if the gene came about because of some other advantage and propagate itself widely, its effect upon reproduction would make it go extinct before very long.

“Gay” is a sexual perversion, and perversions are psychological phenomenon that are shaped by our experiences. Gays may not like it when you point out that they have a kink just like all the other kinks out there and it happens the same way, but that’s what it is.

“Funny that the Left now no longer hold that your genes dont determine your gender but The Gay must be genetic, huh?”
Good point. Gayness and gender confusion are kinda the same thing.

We are born naked, there is no wear the clothes of the opposite sex gene. Eighty years ago when I was a baby it was very common for baby boys to be dressed in dresses. I recall some pictures mom had.
Homosexuality has nothing to do with procreation it has to do with masterbation, whether alone or mutually.

Didnt William Buckley call Gore a homosexualist since that was the basis by which he defined his whole life? He called him a pansy and threatened to slap his face on live TV coverage. They had them in different rooms the next day. 😀

How would it be passed down to the next generation? Bi-sexual?

Did you read the rest of my comment? Yes, someone could be a bi, but even if they had a 1% lower rate of fecundity than the rest of the population, eventually the gene would self-extinct itself.

Responsibility. Definitely. These days, it is just about anything goes... and getting worse. It is conceivable that the Left will be pushing pedophilia in the future. That is the next way from personal responsibility and towards “anything goes.”
Lol. I think that the opposite sex was icky was because their behaviors were so foreign to the opposite sex — male to female and female to male.
IMHO, that is because we are all wired differently, male vs female, and of our specialized roles. Generally, girls are nurturing and very perceptive nesters and very expressive and verbal, whereas boys are rough around the edges, get dirty, physical.
Women need these characteristics to be able to effectively raise offspring and men need their characteristics to fight “wars” for turf, and hunting and killing animals for food and resources, thereby providing for their mates and offspring.
It is puberty that allows us to bridge the gap and it is not sexist, its Biology 101.

Love your answer. I was in one of the very first “diversity” classes at a major corporation. It was a week filled with mind games.
Long story short: They were defending the “born this way” aspect of homosexuality. I told them it was a choice, and backed up my argument by saying that my family had more than its fair share of alcoholics and addicted members, and there are arguments that alcoholism is inherited as well, but I CHOOSE not to drink or do drugs at all. So “gay” is a CHOICE.
Instructor couldn’t refute that, so he said, “Well, I choose not to live a lonely celibate lifestyle.

It was a maybe response that ended in a question mark. That is the only way I could imagine that they cold pass their defective gene, if one exists?

“thanks for not pointing out the double negative.”
In a sense it’s a double negative, but the way you put it is different than if you said.
You said
“Funny that the Left now no longer hold that your genes dont determine your gender ...”
Removing the double negative and saying instead
“Funny that the left holds that genes determine your gender ...” isn’t the same thing.

“They want company. The more, the better.”
Well misery loves company as everybody should know.
And when you’re miserable, your conscience is trying to talking to you - but they won’t listen.
The devil plans on having a lot of it. Judging by the state of morality in the world for the past 4000 years or so, I’d say he’ll have more than plenty of company.
