a woman staying on an island in a lake that straddles the border between Minnesota and Ontario, Canada has been killed by a black bear

...

The 62-year-old woman was staying at a remote family cabin on Red Pine Island in Rainy Lake. The island, in Canadian waters, is about 10 miles northeast of International Falls.

...

Ontario Provincial Police Constable Jim Davis says the woman, who was staying with her parents from Minnesota, went outside when she heard her two dogs barking Sunday evening and never returned. Davis says the parents called police who shot the bear after finding it standing over the woman’s body.

The common belief that surprising a mother bear with cubs is the most dangerous kind of black bear encounter is inaccurate. Instead, lone male black bears hunting people as a potential source of food are a greater cause of deadly maulings and related predatory attempts.

Beware the bear that stalks in silence: followed by a fast rush. Once predatory bear behavior is initiated it may persist for hours unless it is deterred.

Got to wonder why a 62 year old woman would be doing staying in a place like that with her parents, who must be pushing 90.

Dogs can be a trigger for a bear attack. Has happened before.

If you have ‘em young, like around 18, they’d be 80, not that far fetched.

Why would you wonder why she’s visiting her parents? What does that have to do with the bear attack?

Man, black bear deaths are really rare. But if one is gonna happen, that is part of the geographical sweet spot.

I read that quote the last time I was in one of these Black Bear threads. It was a worthwhile thread because it caused me to do a lot of research on the critters. I have 32 acres, 2/3 of it wooded. And there are occasional black bear sightings around here.

But I’m honestly not too worried about an attack, what with sticks, a machete, etc., and the fact that they are not agressive like grizzlies. And they are not really that big compared to a 6’ 1” guy like me in shape.

Though I’d not want to fight one. Weight is only part of the formula.

Five month old. That is the key evidence.

I think this was a vacation rental. I doubt that her parents would be living there year round. Of course, I could be wrong, but life in the Minnesota north country gets pretty harsh in the winter.

So, no, I'm not blaming the victim, just wondering why older people would pick such a remote location for a vacation.

Seems to me a gun might have a really good use here.

A New Mexico man is sharing his story of survival after he was attacked by a 400 pound bear. He killed the bear while its jaw was clamped around his leg, and the jaw stayed that way for a while.. When he saw me, he pinned his ears down and immediately made a big charge at me,” said Petrini.

That’s when the struggle began. Petrini says he was armed with a pistol and shot the bear as he was being mauled.

Somehow he had bitten down on my calf muscle it had basically twisted it over his bottom jaw so he died with his teeth locked and so I wasn’t able to get away from him,” Petrini said.

Raton Fire Department, along with Game and Fish, responded to the scene, but moving the nearly 400-pound animal proved challenging so they eventually sawed the dead bear’s head off, leaving it attached to Petrini’s leg.

I’m in Kentucky. Typical weight around here is less than 200 lbs and typically in the 15o lb range.

And to be clear, there is more to it than weight, but still.

There is a reason God didn’t give Pit Bulls the temperament of a Chihuahua. :)

My BIL is in tremendous physical condition. When he ventures into the wilderness he carries a .44 magnum.

Minnesotans and their vacation cabins. Pretty much a way of life there. My grandmother kept one well into her 70s and would drive herself to it often.
