What's Wrong Drawing inspiration from the other world-famous Washingtonian product, the Boeing 737 MAX airplane, Microsoft introduced Windows 10 1903 with a boatload of insufficiently-documented under-the-hood changes. Some of these changes affect Deferred Procedure Call (DPC) tick-rate, causing spikes in DPC latency, affecting the audio pipeline.
Focusrite beautifully summarized DPC affecting audio: DPC (Deferred Procedure Call) is the operation that Windows uses to assign a priority to processes/drivers that run simultaneously in the same system. If processes that are involved in streaming audio aren't assigned high enough priority then various issues can occur since the audio will not be streamed correctly in 'real-time'. These can include pops/clicks, "glitchy" audio and device disconnections.
It goes on to postulate that outdated drivers for audio devices that have gone EOL (end of life) that aren't ready for dynamic DPC could effectively render your otherwise physically-perfect discrete sound cards unusable. "A common cause for DPC latency is out of date device drivers and Windows processes that are not optimized correctly. Many processes/drivers are involved in streaming audio and many other processes/drivers can cause interruptions in the audio stream."

In the above Tweet, Pete posted a link to an Update applicable to Windows 1903 chronicled under KB4505903. This update was touted to fix audio glitches, and would go on to be part of the August Patch Tuesday rollout (you can separately download it here).
Did the Patch Work? No. At least not in case of my sound cards.

It took hours to figure out how to fix the corrupted startup files because first I had to find them in a hidden partition with hidden files. And they could only be altered using programs on the recovery media and even then I kept getting the error that access was denied. I finally had to delete the corrupted files before one of the Windows 10 recovery utilities was able to rewrite them. It was a bit of a nightmare with nothing I found on the internet being very helpful. If I hadn't had a lot of experience dating back 40 years I would have had to reinstall everything over this nonsense.
Once I got everything working again I immediately imaged the system.

Of course I also used the group policy editor in Windows 10 Pro and also changed the settings in Windows Update to prevent driver updates to help prevent this type of surprise.
So is Pro worth the price? I read recently that it is being phased out. Have to buy a new computer. Don’t tell anyone but still working on a Dell machine with Vista. Gotta’ be next month.
Does this affect the ASIO driver as well or just the default windows driver? It has long been know that the default windows driver is junk.
Since the last Windows 10 update my new laptop has been crashing and re-booting like mad. First, internet pages began crashing. Then the whole browser began crashing. Then the computer itself.
The crashes even deleted some of my browser add-ons, which I had to re-install multiple times. When they didn’t disappear, they mysteriously turned themselves off.
I tried to roll back the computer, but it keeps crashing before it can complete the task. I’ve given up on even trying.
The last two days, I’ve been consumed with trying everything I know, and visiting lots of knowledge sources - without luck. Today I couldn’t get YouTube to work at all. It wouldn’t even display the player window.
I have no idea why, but a couple of minutes ago, YouTube came back to life. We’ll see how long that lasts.
1903 ruined my ability to use a valuable piece of third party software. It would cost $250 to update it. Other than for word processing and an Internet browser, I’m done with Windows

we had to rush a workaround into production.

Linux Mint. $0, installs quickly and the one problem I had was fixed in 20 minutes. Runs Firefox, Thunderbird, GNU image manipulator, Libre Office, and reboots really fast.
Two words: Linux Mint. Unless you must have some Windows specific programs, it’s unbeatable.

One of my PCs just got the 1903 update yesterday and I was pleased everything seemed fine. Then it rebooted overnight, couldn’t lot on and so it presented me with a TEMP user this morning with none of my stuff. Wasted an hour figuring out what the hell was going on. Thanks Redmond.
I’ve 1903 on all three of my laptops. All work just fine. I really like this edition.

Did you find the “Disk Usage Manager” yet? Where you can zoom in on each disk file structure graph down to the individual files? Pretty cool stuff. :)
Unless the hardware is bad on that Dell, Mint will make it a brand new up to date computer for free. I renewed 5 now so far, from a 2002 Emachine to a brand new HP. And it looks, feels and functions like XP/Vista/Win 7. Very minimal learning curve. The only real difference is the terminology of the exact same functions.
