Law enforcement officers in Virginia have seized enough fentanyl to kill 14 million people, busting a massive three-state drug ring as part of what they called "Operation Cookout." Thirty-five suspects were arrested, and four others are on the run.
"This opioid crisis is not an issue that is happening someplace else, or to someone else. It's happening right here in Norfolk," said G. Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
In total, authorities seized over 30 kilograms of fentanyl, 30 kilograms of heroin, five kilograms of cocaine and over $700,000. It's the largest drug takedown in Virginia in 15 years. They also seized roughly 24 firearms, including an AK-47.
"We're not talking about $500 and $600 deals, we're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars," Terwilliger said. "You know, $20,000 in the trunk of somebody's car in a gym bag, you know, behind a local restaurant."
Terwilliger said the bust spanned three states and that one of the 39 people charged ordered fentanyl from Shanghai and had it delivered to Virginia through the mail. MORE AT LINK

I’ve been saying that for a couple of years.
With all the flooding we had this spring many of my neighbors are growing pot for CBD oil. It’s now legal in the state. Doctors are being encouraged the recommend that instead of opioids. When I stopped into local pharmacy they said they can’t keep the oil in stock. All of their older customers have switched over. Price is dropping.
I imagine more laws in the state making other forms of medicinal legal soon.
Look up Scott County Austin, Indiana. One of the worse areas (and most deaths in the nation).
Drop it all off at the State Prisons and County Jails, give everyone their last hoorah.

Many years ago during my largely misspent youth, I worked for a Beltway Bandit who was under contract to model the effects of chemical and biological warfare.
The main question they were trying to answer was, "How would we know when we were under attack rather than facing an epidemic due to natural causes?"
One of the leading indicators that an epidemic was not a naturally occurring incident was Customs officials and Drug Enforcement officials finding large quantities of lethal chemical or biological agents.
I think you're exactly right.
I also think that it's not the Chinese government behind this but instead, the Chinese government not cracking down of some of the long lived criminal gangs in China in return for their not distributing their products within China.
