Men Beware: Following the Billy Graham Rule Could Get You Fired. It Happened to a N.C. Sheriff.

A former sheriff's deputy in Lee County, N.C., says he was fired from his job for following the so-called Billy Graham rule and asking to be excused from spending a significant amount of time alone with a female trainee. Late last month, Manuel Torres filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Western Division, claiming his firing was the result of religious discrimination.

Torres, who worked for the Lee County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) from 2012 until he was fired in 2017, filed a complaint on July 31 accusing Sheriff Tracy Lynn Carter of discriminating against him by terminating his employment after he requested a reasonable religious accommodation based on his Christian beliefs — namely, Torres asked that he not be forced to spend time alone with a female coworker whom he was assigned to train.

Torres is seeking "equitable and monetary relief in the form of present and future lost wages and benefits, compensatory damages for emotional distress and other injuries, and punitive and/or liquidated damages, as provided by law."

The Billy Graham rule dates back to the 1940s, when Southern Baptist evangelist Billy Graham, who was spending long stretches of time on the road away from his family, made a pact with several other men involved in ministry, called the Modesto Manifesto, vowing to "avoid any situation that would have even the appearance of compromise or suspicion," according to Graham's autobiography.

The idea behind the rule was to obey the Bible's command to "abstain from every form of evil" (sometimes translated "abstain from all appearance of evil"). Graham's desire was that no one should be able to accuse him of sexual misconduct as a result of being spotted alone with a woman.

It depends on how mercenary your daughter might be. You may know she is upright but her boss or trainer may not know that. I have been in that trainer position many times as a highly reliable security guard (I show up for work every time and do not leave early) but I would not advise another man to do that. It never happens to me but I have known it to happen to other guys.

It is dangerous. Some women consider it a perquisite of their employment. Incidents are becoming progressively less rare.

With no implication that Torres is or even considers himself a “victim”, this is clearly a battle — not so much a battle of the sexes — but a battle of the Left’s victim classes.

It was his personal moral rule that he strictly adhered to. Others have since called it a “rule” (note the quotes) to follow in order to prevent accusations of sexual harassment.

I will take it under advisement. I have seen more man on woman groping and harassment than the scenarios presented here. Yes, a woman (or man) can do you great harm with just an accusation - life is neither easy nor fair.

“false and negative referrals” is the clincher. Tons of case law about that, to the point where many employers will provide *no* referrals as policy, as even an okay referral can be taken as negative, because it wasn’t good enough.

Just this alone will make this a slam dunk case. And the other stuff shows a “pattern of retribution” that definitely acts as a judgment multiplier.

people who use religious belief to try the change their employers have to all backwards. Public agencies have no onbiolgation to work with Graham’s teachings. And people have no right to expect it.

I understand how people cower under the threat of false charges, but when you are brave and an adult you do your job as it comes to you.

Can you imagine someone saying i don’t work with blacks because they may charge me with discrimination. It;’s preposterous. But it its a good way to cowards out of the workforce.

As a public agency manager who was charged 3 times with discrimination and found “not guilty”: I speak from personal experience, do the job the way it needs to be done and move on. Stop walking ion eggshells and cowering in the corner like a crybaby afraid to leave the house.

Plenty of men have been found guilty/fired based on hearsay which makes your anecdotal stuff irrelevant.

A lot of male doctors usually request a female or other witness to be present for a simple throat/culture examination, are they cowards or smart?

I live in a major city with a very large and very active police, State Police, and Sheriff department. Anytime a female is arrested, there is always a request for a female officer to do the body search. Caution with mixed sexes is standard police procedure. When the female is transported to the jail, an odometer reading goes out to dispatch to be officially recorded.

If ever I need police assistance, I go outside onto my porch and wait or when they pull up, I step outside.

The officer in the OP is being set up. Apparently they don’t like him for some reason and they want him gone. He makes them uncomfortable...one can only speculate.

When productivity gets cut because of time going through dispositions, lawyer fees, and possible termination along with fines from a jaded female, female with a chip on her shoulders, grifters and con-artists looking to sue, the #metoo movement and well before (Think Violence Against Women Act signed by Bill Clinton), the smart play is to take no chances and do what Vice President Pence does, tell feminism and the hypocrisy of that to take a hike.
