August 21, 2019 at 1:34 PM EDT - Updated August 21 at 1:34 PM NORTH CAROLINA (Mark Price/Charlotte Observer) - A series of Special Forces military training exercises -- including gunfire with blanks -- is being staged across 21 North Carolina counties starting Aug. 30, and the Army is telling the public not to be alarmed at the suspicious-looking activity.

Known as Robin Sage training, the unconventional warfare exercises can be likened to live-action role playing in the extreme, with hostile engagement playing out between Special Forces students, volunteer civilians and soldiers out of Fort Bragg. It continues through Sept. 12, said a press release.

Heavily populated counties like Wake, Cumberland and Union counties are among training sites, according to the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg.

The students will match wits with more seasoned soldiers, who will “act as realistic opposing forces and guerrilla freedom fighters,” officials said in a release.

Advance notice has become a critical part of the program since one soldier was killed and another wounded in 2002 by a Moore County deputy who mistook the exercises for criminal activity.

A similar Fort Bragg military exercise in 1997 created panic in Charlotte, when uptown residents were terrified by the sounds of 100 commandos attacking a warehouse. The “urban warfare” assault incorporated helicopters and “simulated bombs and gunfire,” the Charlotte Observer reported.

The exercises starting next week will involve engagements against a fictitious country known as Pineland, officials said. Staging areas will be largely on private land in 10 of the 21 counties, but the others may feel some impact, officials said.

The 21 counties include Alamance, Anson, Cabarrus, Chatham, Cumberland, Davidson, Davie, Guilford, Harnett, Hoke, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, Richmond, Robeson, Rowan, Scotland, Stanly, Union and Wake counties, officials said.

Local law enforcement agencies and government officials have been alerted, a release said.

“Residents may hear blank gunfire and see occasional flares. Controls are in place to ensure there is no risk to persons or property,” officials said. “Residents with concerns should contact local law enforcement officials, who will immediately contact exercise control officials.”

Unconventional warfare tactics call for the students to “wear civilian clothes,” but the public will be able to identify them by “a distinctive brown armband,” officials said. Vehicles will be labeled, too, along with training areas, a release noted.

“Robin Sage is the U.S. military’s premiere unconventional warfare exercise and the final test of over a year’s worth of training for aspiring Special Forces soldiers,” according to the press release.

“Candidates are placed in an environment of political instability characterized by armed conflict, forcing Soldiers to analyze and solve problems to meet the challenges of this ‘real-world’ training.”

Growing up in Jacksonville, North Carolina in the early 1970’s, every so often we’d be playing out on the playground at school, when a platoon of Marines would trudge out of the woods, in full combat gear. We thought it was so cool.

They’re wussifying the military every day and there are sure to be many more SJW officer types directing enlisted soldiers.

Don't forget the illegal alien invaders coming in from totalitarian countries in Central and South America, and Africa. These illegal alien invaders aren't as particular about killing American citizens, and are used to Authoritarian rule.

The other one made Me think of religion of pieces.

I noticed that they aren’t playing in Our County (Iredell) but they are just North of Us in Rowan. As a matter of fact We were there for a Pain Clinic Appointment Today. I guess they might think We got too many Firearms and the Ammo to go with them down here and don’t want any accidents.

This happens every year. You’d think the local media would know this by now...or might there be another agenda at work?

Years ago, I was talking to a retired Army guy who’d gone through this type of training around early 70s, and he’d spent a month making his way through various counties in NC to reach a target area. He regarded as the best summer of his life.

We went 650 miles around the fires by bus to Denali.

Spent a beautiful day touring Densli. Still here, but have no electric power in Denali Alaska. Not sure what caused the outage as it has been several hours already.

Not a problem for me. Tomorrow we go back to Fairbanks.

Thank you for asking.

If it were up to me, i’d Have commandos in civilian dress cleaning up Antifa. There would be dozens of these masked animals lying on the ground with busted legs and no one would know why.

The Special Warfare Center: training Special Forces soldiers to train foreign friendlies for about 60 years and the object of crazy conspiracy theories for about 30 years. With so many Americans on prescription and nonprescription drugs, it’s all a conspiracy—everything!

Wake County is a little curious. But there is Shearon Harris and Falls Lake to the northeast of the county. A little urban warfare games in downtown Raleigh would work. Maybe take out a few IPs...

Side note: I used to build houses out toward Knightdale and we often saw F-18s and A6s flying low up the Neuse River to Falls Lake. I was with the home buyers on a few occasions. I learned the subtle but unmistakable sound of the approaching, low-flying jets as they came from the south, typically in pairs, sometimes 3 in quick succession. I turned to the buyers and would say, “Has our sales rep mentioned our neighborhood watch program? Oh, here they come now...” :-)

The wives were taken a little aback as the jets suddenly appeared and roared a few hundred feet directly overhead. The husbands were wide-eyed and grinning ear to ear, clenched fist in the air and yelling “YESSSS!”

Chatham and Wake appear to be the northern limits. Hmmm... I’m thinking maybe some night time water crossings at Jordan Lake? ;-)
