THERE'S A SPY IN YOUR MERCEDES
The Sun ^ | 19 Aug 2019 | Rob Pattinson

Posted on 08/20/2019 9:55:42 AM PDT by DUMBGRUNT

MERCEDES has sparked a privacy row by admitting it spies on drivers with tracking devices covertly installed in its cars.

The secret sensors, fitted to all new and used motors sold by the firm’s dealers, pinpoint the vehicle’s exact location.

And it insists they are only activated in “extreme circumstances” — when finance customers have defaulted on their payments.

But it admits sharing car owner information and vehicle location details with third-party bailiffs and recovery firms who repossess the cars.

But Mercedes customers who buy cars through the official financial arm give their permission when signing lengthy terms and conditions — which often go unread.

That’s a double negative. Did you mean they ARE, or they AREN’T?

There is also a spy in my Jeep.

A friend gets a major discount for installing a tracker on his OBD port.

Waiting for a Mercedes car owner to check in here...

I have a friend with an ancient M-B diesel, mostly he worries about finding used fryer grease to make fuel?

In my initial remarks, I failed to mention that once you become the “owner” of a Benz product, there is a maintenance schedule which dictates at what mileage level they will start replacing parts and skinning you alive for the required devices. You are expected to hold still for this, in exchange for the prestige and glory.

Lol. German over-engineering. Aside from the old air-cooled Beetles which were simple to work on, Mercedes, VWs and Audis are overly complex money pits now. You need the tracking devices so the tow trucks can find them.

If 6 bolts to hold something on are more than sufficient the Germans will use 12. To work on one thing you need to first remove 6 other things. No thanks. No more over-rated problematic German Autos for me.

A block of C4 would be easier.

A technique occasional used in Chicagoland.

I had dinner in a restaurant next to such an event.
The roadway was quickly repaired.

Benz products to be glorified Volkswagens.

Long ago a friend complained about the cost of a tune-up for his M-B.

Looking at the engine I said the distributor looked like a VW?
Next time I saw him he said the VW parts worked!

I explained that the VW #3 cyl is retarded a bit for cooling?
He laughed and said it runs just fine!

“Impressing other people is the only reason I’d own one”

My boss was accepted as a full member of Medinah Country Club.
He purchased a new M-B saying he needed the right car for the club!

Our kids caddied at Medinah for years, our Suburban fit right in with many like it.
On busy days the gate guards just waved us in.

You need the tracking devices so the tow trucks can find them.

A few years ago new VWs had a spate of mechanical problems.
A VW dealer wrench that I know, claimed that was to make work for the dealerships!???

The Tesla has more tracking devices than you can shake a stick at, supposedly for theft purposes!!!

a maintenance schedule which dictates at what mileage level they will start replacing parts and skinning you alive for the required devices.

A friend owns a Ferrari, he is a mega gearhead.
The dealer cost for the parts and labor is incredible! BUT, the Ferrari clubs and the internet find the true source of many parts.
Enzo didn't make everything and European dealers sell for less.

Fun bit.
He and his dad were completing a 40k engine out overhaul and dropped some very small part! with a plug out!!! FULL LOCKDOWN!!!

You can roll on his floor and come up clean.
Quartz lights! lots of crawling, NOTHING! Ran out and bought a borescope to look in the open cylinder, nothing!!!

After much discussion, they buttoned it up.
Started.

A-OK.

IIRC the dealer asks $10k, you can pull the engine and ship it to a specialist in N.J. for half that.

The last good MB made was the W126. I have two of them. 1990SEL and a 1988SEC. They never need anything but a lot of fuel.

Oh too bad, she died in 81 at the age of 83.

I need a replacement. I hear Jessica Chastain has a new spy role. Can I get her?

That is a serious upgrade, we will have to check credit and need a health certificate from your doctor plus additional life insurance for a redhead.

Much of that can be eliminated if you want to pay cash?

“it insists they are only activated in “extreme circumstances”

hilariously exemplified according to the Mercedes person in the article as “us not getting our money[paraphrased]”
