A Utah businessman paid $1.32 million for a dime last week at a Chicago coin auction.

It wasn't just any 10-cent piece; the 1894-S Barber Dime is one of only 24 that were ever made, according to Stack's Bowers Galleries, which held the auction Thursday night. Only nine of the coins are confirmed to still exist. The coin was purchased by Dell Loy Hansen, who also owns the Real Salt Lake MLS team.

The S indicates the coin was minted in San Francisco.

Yeah my dad died in ‘82 and left me with one last piece of advice and a thousand coins to go through...none of which were worth more than their face value :)

But now i’m gonna go look through the couch

my dad bought me a coin book in the '60's and I went through his change every night. I found a 3 legged buffalo nickel worth several hundred dollars now.

I don’t know what the seller paid for the coin but I would guess that he should be happy with that winning bid.

The 1894 S silver Barber Dime is one of the rarest and most valuable US coins ever made. During the early part of 1894 there were only 24 proof coins produced at the San Francisco mint that entire year. Only 9 of them are known to still exist. 7 of 9 are uncirculated and 2 are heavily worn. One of those circulated coins was found in an old junk box at Gimbels Department Store and purchased for only $2.40 in 1957.

The Mint's superintendent is said to have produced the coins as gifts to prominent bankers. The superintendent's daughter is also said to have received 3 of the rare barber dimes and spent one on ice cream and sold the other two decades later in the 1950s.

Each coin is worth between $1 Million and $2 Million - making it one of the most valuable and most sought-after collectible coins.

That’s PRETTY cool.

well, there's more.     :)

when my dad passed, my sister and I divided up my dad's coins-mostly junk silver-but including the nickel. I thought the nickel was mine since I found it, but my kind of greedy, none too bright, sister thought it was community property. so I traded her a few 90% silver dollars for it.

the only reason she took the deal is because she thought it was a fake. I still haven't told her...

She wasn’t curious why you wanted it?

she knew I believed it was an authentic 3-legged buffalo but she thought it was a fake. it has never been authenticated by an expert.

since 1995, the internet has made it much easier to authenticate historical items.      I'm convinced of the authenticity of my coin.   I welcome your invitation to post pictures of it so the truth can be known!

I was hoping you'd ask to see pics of my coin.       where else to get better info than FR?

it's late for me now, but I will post coin photos as soon as I can, and ping you.

Back in 1959 I received a nickel in change while purchasing a carton of milk to drink with my lunch in school. The nickel has no date on it. I’ve taken it to several coin dealers and I always get the same response, “Without a date, it’s not worth anything, but I’ll give you ten bucks for it as a novelty.”
I still have it. It’s still in near mint condition.

Buffalo? Jefferson? I get rolls of nickels and pennies, now and then, trying to fill holes in the coin books. Found a 1938 Jefferson on the 4th of July.

Finding things like that is most of the appeal of the hobby. I remember when the coins of the new year coming out was about the most excitement I could hope for, and then hunting down the harder to find mint marks. The last 10 to 20 years have at least thrown some changes into the mix. I make a point of asking if there are any half dollars in the till at the checkout stand. I luck out, occasionally. One kid did a double take when he was forking over a Franklin half He said “ That’s a funny color.”
