Carved into an embankment near the Ice Age Trail on state land in the township of Ringle, and protected from sight by thickened underbrush that he planted, Button would escape detection from law enforcement for almost three and a half years until a concerned hunter called police last Friday, Aug. 9.

The bunker was equipped with electricity, computers, television, and radio. He built a contraption for filtering water, pumping it through charcoal and filters and boiling it. There are also solar panels on the roof and a bike-powered generator inside.

"He was not only surviving, but thriving in this structure through all of the different supplies he was able to find,"

Wonder if he hunted, too. Any children or adults go missing near his cave?

The way I see it; he was already in solitary confinement. He fed and housed himself so the taxpayers were off the hook for that. If we could be sure he was leaving the kiddies alone; I’d say let him be.

Now he will be a drain on the system but I guess that’s the way the system is set up... for now.

I’d prefer to see prisons be working factories or farms for those who were low risk and not convicted of a violent crime. Those inmates could be making little rocks from big rocks.

None of this laying around all day playing cards, board games, and watching tv with their buddies in prison. Hard time would be nothing to do and no one to talk with.

"Given the chance, I think the majority of the U.S. population would choose prison over this type of isolation from human contact," Stefonek noted.

No, I'm pretty sure I'd rather stay in the cave.

Considering the treatment that child molesters get in prison, I’m with you. A hole in the ground sounds like home.

Agreed!!

Or any hole in the wall.

Beats being with hundreds of guys, many of whom have already proven they have no problem inflicting bodily harm!

There was a thread awhile back. Some child molester and murderer finally got his death penalty after something like 30 years. I wish there was honor among thieves (prisoners) - but I don’t think so.

Years ago in the Seattle area a guy killed his wife and daughter, then went to escape to his bunker. Also in a hiking area. He had spent 8 years building it. IIRC they found him just a week after he killed his family. He killed himself as the cops started trying to get into his hole in the ground.

Death row inmates are typically kept in a separate wing of the prison in solitary cells and are not in general population.

No opportunity for prison justice.

Looks like he made his bunker inside a garbage bag.

The amazing part to me is he now is being held on $100,000 bond. After he fled for 3+ years they are going to let him bond out again?

A solo gulag, with an easier work schedule.

Looks that way because most of his supplies came from the local garbage dump!

Read a story years ago about a guy and his daughter who lived in a cave in Oregon. He was just down on his luck and living off the grid. When they were found, they’d been living there a couple years. He was homeschooling his daughter using a Bible and an old encyclopedia.

The girl tested well above her grade level. To the credit of the cops, instead of busting him, they arranged a job on a local ranch that included room and board.

A buddy and I fixed up a cabin years ago and it kept getting broken into and stuff stolen. Neighbor across the road had the same thing happen to them.

One weekend, the neighbor and a buddy were at their cabin and went back into town. Came back after an hour or two and their cabin had been broken into while they were in town.

They figured it was a squatter and so went looking for them. The squatter got the drop on them and had a handgun and told both men to get on their knees. One of the guys had a .38 i the small of his back and grabbed it and shot the guy dead.

The shooter told my buddy later that he had emptied the gun on the squatter but kept shooting because he was so amped up.

A buddy and I fixed up a cabin years ago and it kept getting broken into and stuff stolen.

A friend purchased some acreage in NW Wisconson along a main snowmobile route and developed it with four-season cabins/ homes.

All was well until the first winter with finished cabins.
Indians would move into the cabins clean them out steal the snowmobiles...
The Indians considered going to jail R&R for the winter!
They did not run from the cops!

He ended up providing a cabin rent free year-round to a local couple and they would deal with the Indians, the police were seldom in the area.
