For the third time in a week, LT stood at the reception in the abortion clinic in Shreveport, Louisiana, more than 90 minutes away from her home. She was again looking for the right paperwork to show her boss why she had taken time off work from her busy job at a chain restaurant in north-eastern Louisiana.
LT had first showed him a $550 receipt from the clinic. No, he told the 22-year-old single mother, he wanted a doctors note from the clinic. So using the last $25 she had in her bank account she drove back because, without it, her manager refused to put her back on the schedule.
And LT could not afford to miss any shifts.
Many women did not want to be identified because only a handful of people knew of their situation. They also worried about stigma in their small, southern communities.
But LTs is a common story and not close to one of the worst. In this poor, rural corner of the American south, the process of getting an abortion is logistically difficult, emotionally fraught and often a battle against poverty.
It is also getting harder. A wave of anti-abortion bills have spread across the US, especially parts of the conservative south. The aim is to make abortion more difficult, with more paperwork, bureaucracy and early deadlines and, perhaps, one day outlaw it. That would force already poor women to travel even longer distances to get abortions and spend even more money or have them take risks for illegal procedures.
Kathaleen Pittman, director of the Hope Medical Group for Women, said more than 80% of the women who come in to her Shreveport clinic self-identify as living below the poverty line.

Poverty carries its own punishment.
I said nothing about maiming and killing women.
That happens even when it's legal abortions. Remember Gosnell? Remember Tiller?
The *point* of my post to you is that I can't get past the fact that abortion is murder. Neither should you.
The solution is to help those that are pregnant to term and put the babies up for adoption and/or help the mom be able to take care of the baby.
This also means remaking our sex-saturated culture and not glorify non-marital sex the way it is today. This includes media (internet and Cable TV and even games like Grand Theft Auto).
If we do not do this, our country will most certainly face Judgment. Count on it.
Do you REALLY want to go back to that? Why? Are you okay with maimed and dead women because youre opposed to it? Thats where you and I part company. I think its wrong but I simply dont want to see women killed and injured because I disapprove of their behavior.
Neither do I. But at some point, they have to face up to the choices they have made. Sex is an adult activity and they should act like responsible adults. Abortion should NOT be an option.
I hope we don't part company. However, I do choose God's side. I hope you can reason your way through this and do the same.
'Pod.
It’s always rutting season in the hood.
If you cant afoord birth control then you shouldnt be having sex.
It’s always rutting season everywhere... a trait of humans and bonos
Civilized nations have morals to keep the human rutting under control
Africanized cities have eliminaded civilized morals
You dont get it at all. Keep making excuses for strong, powerful independent women who wilt like daisies when theyre called to be responsible for their life choices...
I save the bulk of my mercy for the innocent.
I find mostly tainted opinionated estimations. One stat was interesting: 5 of 17,000 illegal abortions were fatal to the murdering mother once Roe v Wade helped gain legal access to abortion, where 39 of 140,000 killer moms died as a result of illegal abortions prior to Roe v Wade. Both stats being about 3 of every 10,000 illegal abortions results in death of the mother. Then the only “estimate” I found were from only pro-abortion sources that legal abortion is 17 times safer than illegal abortions.
Wikikpedia shows a graph of abortion RATES climbing substantially after Roe v Wade and finally dropping back to what now is the same rate as the 1973 ruling starting in the early 90s.
I would not be surprised if that downturn was associated with men becoming aware of how bad of a deal it is to become involved with a woman in the US, more/better use of oral contraceptives, and manipulated statistics by those who might have an agenda to support legal abortion.
This argument is very similar to the debate over the War on Drugs. People abuse illegal drugs (and legal drugs too) at their own risk and some of them die. Women seek illegal abortion when they insist the quality of their own life is more important than any life at all for the person conceived in their womb, at their own risk and some of them die.
To observe the SHARP increase in abortions once access could not be denied and to hold to what you stated does not add up in my “estimation”.
My apologies for mistaking your position. My opinion is you can’t claim to be pro-life if you don’t care about ALL PREGNANT WOMEN AND THEIR CHILDREN (Preborn and others). Also it is not pro-life to advocate for forced birth control for women in certain circumstances.
If you convince a women that her only choice should be to remain childless abortion then becomes just another means to that end.
Feminists for life is a great organization that truly gets this.
Wouldn’t it make sense to base any punishment (if at all) for getting an illegal abortion on the age of the fetus? Reserving any jail time for those who had later ones?
The big problem comes from the danger of punishing a woman who has undergone a spontaneous abortion. Which is one very real reason is gets difficult to write punishing women who have criminal abortions in statute.
That is a disgusting reply. Do you have any idea just how that reflects on you?
So sick of old people. Sanctimonious and pious.
So sick of old people. Sanctimonious and pious.
Piety is a goal I fall far short of. Thank God for Grace.
I forgot to add Holier Than Thou types too. The worst.
I follow your posts. You’re not “old” in the traditional sense. I’m talking about rigid old farts.
You are too hard on yourself.
My post was a remix of a cartoon and meant to be humorous.
Sorry if it missed the mark. The cartoon is of a judge admonishing an unruly defendant with “You better show me some respect, son. I had to kiss a lot of ass to get this job.”
You think you’re cleaver but you’re really just tiresome and boring. I will no longer reply to you. Off with you bothersome fly.
Sorry Sparklite. I try to keep up but there are so many irons in the fire of a busy mom’s life. My post about old people was because I’m getting tired of so many elder Freepers who are so hardcore and hellbent on preserving religious rigidity and “thou shall not” dicta (plural of dictum) in their posts.
