What makes a great college football stadium? The best-of-the-best have the perfect mix of location, history, scenery, traditions, technology and, of course, fans who provide ultimate home-field advantage. In honor of college football's 150th anniversary, here are the top 10 stadiums in the sport's history.

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism stands atop Bovard Tower, a short distance from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and watches over the fans as they troop through the USC campus going to and from games. His companions include Plato, Marcus Cicero, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Methodist bishops Phillips Brooks and Matthew Simpson and philosopher and theologian Borden Browne.
I was shocked when I saw that the Rose Bowl really was lower down.
Indeed, it was--although I had to listen to it on the car radio as we drove home from Big Bear Lake where we celebrated the New Year. Several years later, I had a dentist who was the brother of USC's backup quarterback in that game.
It is so low down that you can see trees towering over it when you are sitting inside.
I’ll have to check that out on my next trip to Berkeley.
The 2nd Death Valley is at LSU. Ours took the name at least 2 decades before LSU.
My wife was went to that Super Bowl. It was a real foggy day. I waited outside hoping to snag a ticket, but no luck.
If you were sitting in the student section... at the time that was basically the south end zone... then you know how bad the sight lines are. When I had seats in that section the football game that day was nothing but a rumor. A few times I scored someone’s season tickets on the 40-yd line, under the press box. Much better seats, but still aluminum benches.
The worst drinking I saw (and I saw a lot) was when Jerome Bettis and ND came to town. The ND fans paid whatever it took to get the best seats and so they were sprinkled in just about everywhere. The PSU season ticket fans (unlike the students) were a reserved bunch. But when the game swung against ND, they were merciless on the drunk ND dude 3 rows in front of us.
Terrible list without FSU stadium.
I’d also like to get to Franklin Field while its still around.
Early kickoff only. It’s still a neighborhood where you don’t want to be after dark.
The most memorable thing for me was seeing the rows and rows of RVs and like on the fields outside Beaver. People had some sweet looking converted buses.
Thanks to their embarrassing loss in the playoffs to Clemson we demoted “Touchdown Jesus” to “Field Goal Jesus.”
Best collegiate game I ever saw was the ‘79 season opener between Michigan & Northwestern in Ann Arbor. Everything about that game was just classy. The opening kickoff was returned by Anthony Carter 102 yards for a touchdown. “Hey, that freshman looks pretty good!”
Franklin Field
I can’t see that name without hearing a drunk Howard Cosell slurring his way through it. lol
good for kids and adults go on a clear day.
Worst of all, I’ve never seen any actual Beavers there.
I drove san Jose and SF to Sacramento many times
Favorite stop
Everett and Jones B-B-Q Oakland and Moms in Emeryville or Berkeley. Can’t find moms on line. Moms had no seats take away. mercies and porches lined up double parked on Friday night where all you could do was take a pre-packed dinner a slab and two sides and your choice of spicy sauces.
We don’t have anything close in oceanside CA Nor did we in Sacramento,.
The Oregon State Stadium is called Reser Stadium. Reser’s Fine Foods donated the money to build it. Reser’s main claim to fame is potato salad. Therefore locals, such as myself, often refer to the place as “The Potato Bowl”.
As a kid my father took me to a December game or two when the Iggles were long finished for the season. Waaay in the upper rows of the end zone sections where the players really looked like ants on the ground.
Ah yes...the Norm Snead, Joe Kuharich era...
As a kid, my Dad took me to a B’klyn Dodger game and a NY Ranger game.
In later years I was privileged to take him to NY Giant and Ranger games. Both he and Mom were my guests at many Met games...even took them to see them at the Vet once.
Much as I enjoyed being taken to those two games by Dad, I think I enjoyed taking him and Mom even more.
