Chinese fans might not be able to see their favourite TV shows or celebrities for 100 days after Beijing issued a ban on pop idols dramas and costume dramas.
The latest order, effective from today, demands broadcasters across the country air patriotic shows only as the Communist Party prepares for the 70th anniversary of the founding of People's Republic of China on October 1.
TV stations cannot show TV series other than selective titles from a list of 86 nationalist productions, which includes one that pays tribute to the country's first Premier Zhou Enlai and another named 'I love you, motherland'.
The announcement has sparked wide discussion on Chinese social media, such as Twitter-like platform Weibo.
A trending topic prompted by the news has attracted nearly 111,000 comments and one billion views.
Many web users seem to be infuriated by the mandatory policy, condemning the authority of stripping them of their freedom.
One user wrote: 'To be honest, if I don't like [entertaining] shows, I can choose not to watch, but you cannot take away my rights to choose.'
Another commentator queried: 'The question is how to define the entertainment value?'
A third person challenged: 'What ill influence will costume dramas have if they are shown?'
The thread proved to be so influential that the Weibo moderator has shut the comment section to prevent any potential criticism to the policy.

He’s already had himself written into the constitution so he’s already at the Mao level, has been for some time.
But that doesn’t make his policies work or the CNY stable. Here’s a 90 second audio clip with 10 reasons to wonder if the CCP can survive the next 12 months:

So maybe he’s being provocative...but how about 5 years or even 10? Xi is on thin ice.
What’s a costume drama?
You mean they cant show coke, Pepsi, 7Up, or RC cola bottles on Chinese TV? Wow, they are some paranoid MoFos.
Sounds like they are fed up with the Hollywood influence on their culture...
It sounds like some users desired a 3 a.m. door splintering.
So no tv worth watching, higher food prices and a crap ass economy. He is going to be very popular this summer!
So television in China will look more like North Korean television except for extra flashiness. It seems that many Chinese people continue to crave empire after so many years.
Watch out for the attempts at expansion in the near future. We might even see the nukes fly.
How many of these critics got a late night knock on their door?
Essentially, anything that shows Chinese culture before the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
I’m cool with this. Imagine if American networks could only show positive, pro_America programming for three months? CNN and MSDNC would have to shut down. LOL
Crap TV like everywhere else is my guess.
There is a creepy factor with China and it will all be very difficult to pull off in the information age we live in today. This would have been much easier 20 years ago, but China has gotten a taste of freedom and a view of the world.
I do not know how this will end, but their country is not the monolithic powerhouse many Americans think. It is a nation with one foot in their history and communism and the other foot in the West and those two landmasses are moving apart.
So, the way to get people angry at totalitarianism is to take away their telly? Lets try it here and credit the Dams.
Downton Abbey, but in Mandarin.
We call them horse operas or sword and sandals pics
Yeah that’s it.
SMFH
It has nothing to do with it being a COMMUNIST country that makes EVERY decision for you.
Here’s an idea. Think for 5 seconds before you type.
I had the same problem for a while too.
Have a good one.
111,000 comments and one billion views.
That doesn’t sound like a lot of comments compared to the views.
But i don’t know the average so it might be just about right
