WASHINGTON—The number of migrants encountered by U.S. authorities at the southern border has dropped below 100,000 for the first time in five months amid increased collaboration with Mexico and Guatemala to crack down on the flow, according to government data released on Thursday, Aug. 8. In July, there were 82,049 people encountered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), down 21 percent from June when there were 104,344 people and down 43 percent from May. The number of family units and unaccompanied minors crossing the border also dropped. Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan traveled to border town—Yuma, Arizona—on Thursday to detail the border numbers. He said that in mid-June there were more than 1,250 children in custody for 72 hours or longer—but that had dropped to about 160 children by Wednesday, with an average custody time of fewer than 24 hours.

Is the “total” number down 20K?

Or - did 20K more illegals figure out how to evade the Border Patrol?

Or - did Border Patrol let 20K illegals sneak by because there is no place to house them?

These are hardly good numbers and they are probably due to the hot summer season.

Oh, don’t be such a pessimist.

Enforced discouragement works, every time it is tried. Fewer people all the time are making the trek the length of Mexico to get to the US border, and in fact, Mexico is accepting many more of these “refugees”, many of whom are in no real danger in their home countries, but find a more positive reception in a country that speaks a similar language and has similar customs.

I’d like to be called a realist. When the numbers get down into the teens I’ll be happy.

Is there anyone left in central America? Those numbers are disgusting. They might be reducing simply because of there’s not many people left. Can we convince white liberals to move to Honduras? If they build a nice white suburbia that will attract the illegal construction workers and mowers back.

You obviously do not understand the gravity of the situation.

Or you simply don’t care.

And the Leftists maintain that using the word “invasion” is hate speech.

Why, because most of the invading force is already here.

I’m not a pessimist.

I want to see the TOTAL monthly figures.

Every month, Border Patrol makes an estimate of how many people evaded arrest.

When they don’t post the estimate, I am instantly suspicious.

By the way - July and August are the slowest two months of the year because of dangerous heat.

And, 90% of asylum seekers are lying. 50% don’t even show up for their first court hearing. And another 30%-40% are rejected when they do show up.

I don’t think the heat is the reason for the drop with the masses of asylum seekers. In spite of the media hype MOST of them were bused up in nice tour buses with A/C, a fair amount even flew into border cities to cross. These groups were on buses for all but the walk across. Most were also crossing at night so maybe a 5 minute if that walk across. We hike further in airports or even Walmart than these people do crossing the border illegally. One of many reasons I am convinced this was all well organized, well financed.

Some areas are seeing more of a drop off in numbers than others- my area has had a drastic drop, some areas not so much. The Mexican Military activity is heavy across the border here though. In this area the numbers did not drop when it got hot, it was already hot here and the numbers only dropped here after the Mexican Military arrived on the other side.

Normal illegal traffic that really does hike across the desert, yes that traffic falls off in the summer heat every year.

In my area it is pretty obvious when they get by, since we see most of them as they travel through- which we report of course so most don’t really get away here, there are too many miles from the border to civilization here so no way to blend in. We have not seen any what we call stragglers, none since the Mexican Military started working the area S. of the border here. Which is pretty unusual for us to not see any illegals.

I can’t speak for other areas of course.

I would bet more than 90% are lying. They are well coached though to say the magic words. This whole mess has been financed and organized and I hope someone is figuring that out- need arrests. It is obvious!

Thanks for the good news.

On the other hand, Trump has the Executive authority - 8 U.S.C. §1182(f) - to completely seal the Mexican border to ALL aliens, legal or otherwise.

Unfortunately, he has made it quite clear that he will never use that authority.

Problem is judges say different. Even the US Supreme Court backed up a lower court and kept him from not allowing people who come here illegally to claim asylum. That action was the number one reason for the flood of so-called asylum seekers. At some point the US Supreme Court may make an actual ruling that will support not allowing those that come here illegally to apply for asylum. Has not happened yet.

That is one of our biggest problems in this country; our Constitution and our laws say one thing but many judges have no issue ruling contrary to that.

8 U.S.C. §1182(f)

“Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”
