Apple Has Activated Software Locks on iPhone Batteries to Discourage Third-Party Repairs

Apple has activated a “dormant software lock” that effectively kneecaps third-party replacement batteries on some newer models of iPhone

Even using another Apple battery doesn’t work, according to iFixit, as a replacement battery can apparently only be authenticated using the company’s internal tools:

iFixit compared the practice to having a “Check Oil” light in a vehicle that can only be deactivated at a Ford dealership.

I can’t wait for my Iphone S6 to die. I’m going over to Android when it does.

I’ve loved my Android’s.. Except for the fact they are Google phones.

I don’t know if it works, but some folks claim you can remove the chip, hot glue it near the ignition, then use key’s without transponders in them- there are some youtube vids on it- and there is also a more complicated procedure- suing wiring hacks or something- I can’t vouch if they work or not though- I don’t have enough keys left to try it- I suppose you could try taping a whole transponder key near the ignition, then try using a transponderless key in the ignition (you can get one made very cheaply- I had one made to open my car door- but of course it won’t start the car without hte transponder chip)

oh and I did buy what i thought were transponder blank keys (which you are supposed to be able to program yourself-) had them cut to fit door and ignition, tried to program them according to instructions found online, but nope- it didn’t work-

It’s just sick that something so simple like a key has to be so darned expensive and limited in numbers you can get before the whole mechanism has to be replaced-

One thing I learned about those electronic keys...

Never, ever let one get into the washing machine. Very expensive mistake.

Wait, wasn't this already litigated for something else, like maybe toner/ink cartridges, and the OEMs lost to the third parties?

Yes and no. Water will fork the cheap ones, but quality ones, even aftermarket will work fine.

A friend of mine had an electronic key that stopped working and was told BY THE DEALER to never put your electronic key in the same pocket as your cell phone.

When the cell phone rings and sends out a signal to the nearest cell tower, it could possibly ERASE your key.

I work around high power microwave signals and my key to my Lincoln sudden would not work one day when I went to go home.

So, be aware................

Never owned an iPhone.. Would never buy another slow-as-molasses iPad. Regret buying a Google Samsung phone because of their politics and privacy abuses. What’s left? The Jitterbug? Ugh.

No, this wasn’t a “cheap one”. It was one of those German switchblade keys. What didn’t work was the remote lock/unlock.

I was able to get a used one on eBay, I swapped out the blade from the dead key and was able to reprogram it so it worked.

But that was a 2000 car. You can’t do the reprogramming any more.

Magnets, I don’t think so, but better to be safe than sorry.

The same warning applies to Microwave ovens!.......Never put your keys ON IT..................or IN it!...................

But...but...the Freeper iPhone fanatic promised phones without swappable batteries weren’t doing this.
