Took the Durango to Silverton a few years ago. Great fun! I want to do it again.
I’ve got a better idea, JAG. Take the Cumbres and Toltec instead. I made the mistake of taking the D&S AFTER I’d taken the C&T. Kind of a letdown.
Here’s a link to some highlights:

Rode it in 2015. Awesome.
I rode this railroad back in the eighties with my parents. They were on vacation and I took off work a few days to join them in Colorado. Great trip.
Wow. I couldve written the exact same thing. Just last year I took the Cumbres and Toltec trip then two days later rode the Durango and Silverton railroad. Both are very good. No doubt. But if you can only ride one steam locomotive train in Colorado; ride the Cumbres and Toltec.
That’s a great video!
Here’s something that’s a lot different but still visually compelling. Hope you enjoy...

That song was running through my mind as I was watching the train vid. Thanks for posting. Had forgotten it was C.W. McCall.
I lived just up the valley from Silverton. Took the Million Dollar Highway many a time and saw the D&S Narrow Gauge pull into and outta town often. But never rode it.
That one is on my list also!
It’s an all-day trip with a buffet lunch, and the bus ride back is through some stunning scenery. Best of all, it’s all wilderness. Very little townscapes
I just watched a 1 hour program on TV Sunday night about the Durango/Silverton RR. Very interesting.
A couple of pointers for anyone who has not ridden this train and wants to. They have two types of passengers cars, open sides cars and closed cars. The train is wood burning, steam operated and produces lots of smoke and ash. If you ride in the closed cars you can see the scenery through the windows and you will not be covered with soot. If you ride in the open cars you will be covered in ash and soot but be able to lean over the side of the car and get great views. When we rode the train some years back we rode in the open sided cars figuring that I can always take a shower.
