ARLINGTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – An Arlington Police officer shot and killed a woman at Cantor and Collins in North Arlington around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
He was apparently shooting at a loose dog coming towards him, when the woman lying in the grass was struck.
The officer was not hurt.
Arlington police officers, the Arlington Fire Department and EMS were dispatched to a welfare check in which the caller reported that a woman was passed out in a grassy area near Cantor Drive and N. Collins Street.
As the officer began to approach what appeared to be a woman lying in the grass, he noticed there was also a loose dog, police said in a news release.
As the officer called out to the woman repeatedly concerning her welfare, the dog began to run towards the officer while barking.
The officer walked backwards from the running dog while drawing his gun.
The officer fired it multiple times towards the dog.
“After the shots were fired, the woman yelled out and it was apparent she was injured,” police said in the news release.

I’ve already received e-replies supporting my point of view and there will be more both on this thread and privately. I sent this thread with my comments to my private emailing list, which includes a retired big city Cop, a lawyer, military Vets, and almost all of them either own dogs or have in the past. Including one who owns a part pit bull dog. Very curious to see their replies to me.

I absolutely positively would not have fired. A 40 lb dog doesn’t scare me that much and is not an immediately lethal threat. I’ve been attacked and bitten many times. A cop has a duty to the community before and as well as to himself. Back when cops were men they knew this. Back when cops were men they’d have been disgusted by this display of abject cowardice.

People had called about her condition and she was “known” by other people in the area as someone who hangs out. I’m only speculating but maybe she was “homeless” or whatever. That doesn’t mean the cop had a right to shoot but there could be factors that aren’t known yet. I have to agree with some other people here that the dog should have been on a leash. Dogs can be great but they also can create bad situations. They’re animals. They can be unpredictable. I had a carpenter on one of my jobs years ago who brought his dog to work and it bit another worker and that created a problem. Not big. But I stopped that policy cold because of insurance.

The video in post #31 indicates that this was not a neighborhood, but a bunch of vagrants and drug addicts. The dog was never on a leash, and the woman was "homeless."
Not saying the cop acted appropriately. Not in the least. But the shooting didn't take place in a Mayberry USA neighborhood.
You are either a fool or superman, either way, Go get a gun and a badge then dude. Make the world safe for unruly dogs.

He won’t get fired. All the cop has to do is say “I was in fear of my life” and voila, case closed.

Local cops shot a guy in a car years ago. Someone found a slug in a watermelon that was in front of Albertson’s, about 100 yards away. It crossed a busy road, a parking lot, and the sidewalk in front of the store before striking the melon.
