Arlington Police Officer Shoots, Kills Woman While Firing Gun At Loose Dog

ARLINGTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – An Arlington Police officer shot and killed a woman at Cantor and Collins in North Arlington around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

He was apparently shooting at a loose dog coming towards him, when the woman lying in the grass was struck.

The officer was not hurt.

Arlington police officers, the Arlington Fire Department and EMS were dispatched to a welfare check in which the caller reported that a woman was passed out in a grassy area near Cantor Drive and N. Collins Street.

As the officer began to approach what appeared to be a woman lying in the grass, he noticed there was also a loose dog, police said in a news release.

As the officer called out to the woman repeatedly concerning her welfare, the dog began to run towards the officer while barking.

The officer walked backwards from the running dog while drawing his gun.

The officer fired it multiple times towards the dog.

“After the shots were fired, the woman yelled out and it was apparent she was injured,” police said in the news release.

Good Job, APD Training Manager,

Your officers are no longer killing the dog

The article says the woman was the Fire Chief’s daughter. What kind of dog was it?

Uh, WTF? Idiot didn’t bother clearing his line of fire at all????

This guy *better* get fired. Even if you somehow horribly want to discount his malfeasance in shooting the dog and the woman, this is the kind of idiot that accidentally shoots *other officers*.

Yea I’m glad they missed the dog but they hit the woman.

Tazers don’t work on dogs?

Another stupid part about this is that it was 5:30pm - still bright daylight this time of year. No excuse for not seeing anything.

Some health check. Now she’s dead of a gunshot.

It can work, but it isn’t as nearly as effective as when it works on humans.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7o1v5SnXbE

Keep in mind that there is apparently a relatively small but significant percentage of the adult *human* population that the Taser doesn’t actually do *anything* to except maybe give them a little tingle at worst. Apparently some peoples’ nervous systems simply are not significantly affected.

On the other hand, this particular department has had some deserved and some undeserved bad press about being *extremely* Taser-happy in recent years to the point where they were a bit overenthusiastic about Taser use and some people died. Including one incident where two cops decided to Tase a man who had soaked himself in gasoline despite another cop on the scene yelling at them not to because the Taser would ignite the gasoline and the man would go up like a torch. The two officers pulled their Taser triggers anyway and the man unsurprisingly immediately exploded into flame and died. It’s more than possible that APD officers have now been trained to NOT use the Taser in similar circumstances.

If this was the Fire Chief’s daughter, this is going to get *real* ugly behind the scenes real fast.

I went through training to get my concealed carry permit. We were taught to know what is behind your target before firing. We were also told that we could be held responsible, criminally and civil, for every round discharged.

Why are LEO’s held to a lower standard?

No idea. But he needs to be fired and charged with at least negligent homicide immediately. That’s what would happen if a CCW permit holder did the same thing, no good reason why he should be treated any different.

The shooter is too dumb to be a cop. Sorry but the very first thing anyone who pulls a trigger should be thinking about is where that bullet is going when he misses. Cops are way too quick to shoot dogs these days. I don’t know if some idiot at the academy is teaching them this nonsense but it must stop.

Not a good idea to get between a cop and a dog.

The human victim was well behind the dog. The cop just sprayed and prayed - therefore he should be in jail.

Three rapid fire shots, so maybe ONE was actually aimed!
He knew she was behind the dog and fired anyway.
Either monumental stupidity or incredible overconfidence that all shots would be stopped by the dogs body.
Apparently he did manage to wound the dog.
Not sure what his weapon was but even he hit the dog center-mass every time it’s most likely the rounds would have passed through the dog and still hit the woman.

If a CCW holder did this they would be charged with reckless homicide at the least.
This moron will probably just get sent back guarding the jail for a while and then a do-over and back on the street.
Only way that does not happen is if the fireman Dad has some pull.

Something about the story is strange. Notice the part where story states policeman was backing up.
