Doctors Find 526 Teeth in 7-Year-Old Boy’s Mouth in India
KTLA ^ | 08/01/2019

A 7-year-old boy complaining of jaw pain was found to have 526 teeth inside his mouth, according to the hospital in India where he was treated.

The boy was admitted last month in the southern city of Chennai because of swelling and pain near his molars in his lower right jaw.

When doctors scanned and x-rayed his mouth, they found a sac embedded in his lower jaw filled with “abnormal teeth,”

After discovering the sac, two surgeons removed it from the boy’s mouth. Then Ramani’s team took four to five hours to empty the sac to confirm its contents and discovered the hundreds of teeth.

Ramani said the boy was suffering from a very rare condition called compound composite odontoma. She said what caused the condition is unclear, but it could be genetic or it could be due to environmental factors like radiation.

The boy actually may have had the extra teeth for some time. His parents told doctors that they had noticed swelling in his jaw when he was as young as 3, but they couldn’t do much about it because he would not stay still or allow doctors to examine him.

I read about this yesterday. Not discussed is whether those teeth are likely to grow back. For that child’s sake, I hope not. It was surprising to read that additional surgery was not needed to repair the boy’s face and jaw.
He probably had a liquid diet for quite some time.

I was just thinking the same thing when I read your post. It seems that an awful lot of genetic freaks occur in India. I don't know if it's the poor health care system, the unsanitary habits of bathing in rivers where they also dump dead bodies, the filth from cows in the streets, or an insidious chemical agent we know nothing about.

I know Bhopal was miles away from this area, but still, could there be a link? The Bhopal Disaster of 1984.

A gas leak at Union carbide in India kills t least 3,787 people, over 500K exposed to methyl isocyanate (MIC).
Said to be the worst industrial disaster in the world!

Poor kid. I had one abnormal tooth, and dealing with that was bad enough.

Monkeys. Dirty, lying, stealing primates. Since Indians have no trunks to keep them in, they are allowed to run loose like, well, monkeys.. I hate a 🐵..

There are a lot of people in India, so strange anomalies happen more often.
Probably happens in China too but they keep it quiet.

It’s having 1.4 billion people in the country. Very rare things become seemingly common in large sample sizes. A 1 in 100 million genetic oddity will exist 14 times in India.
