Japan Approves First Human Animal Embryo Experiments

According to Nature, Hiromitsu Nakauchi, who leads teams at the University of Tokyo and Stanford University in California, plans to grow human cells in mouse and rat embryos and then transplant those embryos into surrogate animals. Nakauchi's ultimate goal is to produce animals with organs made of human cells that can, eventually, be transplanted into people.

Lack of human kidney and heart donors is a death sentence for the 100,000 people that need kidneys or the 4,000 that need hearts at any one time. If transgenic animals can meet this need I’m all for it. The big problem doesn’t seem to be getting the animals to produce the organs but doing it in a way that doesn’t get rejected by the host immune system. Taking immunosuppresive drugs for a lifetime is very risky. What they need are organs that have their immune response genes blocked using CRISPR/Cas9 so that they can be transplanted to anyone.

Dave, the fact that you don’t see any potential problems with this, is all I need to know about you.

Women who lost their breasts due to breast cancer surgery created a need for breast implants. This led women who just wanted larger breasts to get breast implants. This led to lots of women feeling they HAD to get breast implants just to compete for potential mates. This led to lots of women in later life having back troubles lugging huge breasts around.

In the future they will be able to implant chips in peoples' heads to fix brain injuries. This will lead to people getting chip implants just to improve otherwise standard capabilities. This will lead to people feeling they HAVE to get chip implants just to compete in the job market.

If AI doesn't kill us, then we will turn ourselves into robots one body part at a time.

No.

It means the animals will grow organs different in just ONE respect:

The cell surface epitopes will be humanized.

What are epitopes? Picture the outer cell membrane as featuring verrrry particular LOCKS, like that of a car door, which are specific to YOU ONLY.

When the cells of your immune system bumps into those cells, they feel the dynamics of those locks, which then say, “I AM HUMAN, I am that guy” instead of saying “I’m something else, so attack me” or “I am a pig, not a human, so please attack me”.

Don’t go all Alex Jones, thinking minotaurs, etc.

This is to permit organ transplantation.

I’m not sure what your objection is to a potential lifesaving medical advance like this. We already use animals as models to test drugs before we test them on humans. This process simply modifies an animal’s genes to produce organs that duplicate the structures and functions of human organs so they can be transplanted into dying humans. The animals don’t “become human” they are simply reprogrammed to generate human parts rather than animal parts.
