Mysterious Radiation Cloud Over Europe Traced to Secret Russian Nuclear Accident

A vast cloud of nuclear radiation that spreadover continental Europe in 2017 has been traced to an unacknowledged nuclear accident in southern Russia, according to an international team of scientists.

The experts say the cloud of radiation detected over Europe in late September 2017 could only have been caused by a nuclear fuel-reprocessing accident at the Mayak Production Association, a nuclear facility in the Chelyabinsk region of the Ural Mountains in Russia, sometime between noon on Sept. 26 and noon on Sept. 27.

Russia confirmed that a cloud of nuclear radiation was detected over the Urals at the time, but the country never acknowledged any responsibility for a radiation leak, nor has it ever admitted that a nuclear accident took place at Mayak in 2017.

2017 was not the first time there was a nuclear incident at Mayak. In 1957, the nuclear waste material stored at the site exploded with a force of perhaps 100 tons of TNT. It is regarded as the 3rd worst nuclear accident in history.

Chernobyl II?

In that incident, the Russians did everything they could to not admit what happened and when they did, downplayed it.

Thanks for the heads-up! It may be a couple of years late though...

There have been a number of accidents in and around Mayak.

They don’t seem to know what they are doing there.

That’s the government for you. But, I think the workers do care, just don’t know better.

Article, and its linked new detailed scientific article, estimates 30 - 100 times more radiation released in this ‘Mayak 2’ accident than by Fukushima, with ‘Mayak 1,’ aka Kyshtym, back in 1957 releasing 6 - 10 times as much as Mayak 2. So why does Fukushima get credited as the second worse nuclear disaster? It had a high potential for release, but the Japanese have to date admirably minimized that. And I’m unsure Fukushima even deserves ranking as fourth worst accidental radiation release. I wonder how much radiation submarine K19’s accident released into the atmosphere? I wonder how much radiation two American, and many Soviet, sunk nuclear subs have released into the ocean? Not to mention the numerous old nuclear reactors the Sovietd just dumped into the ocean off Novaya Zemlya!

Not much if any at all. Supposedly the USN goes back periodically to monitor both sites and hasn't detected any increase of radioactive material.

You may or may not believe it, but I do. It's possible that the reactors have not even melted down. It takes electrical power to keep the control rods out of the reactor, so they both definitely scrammed. And those reactors generally have enough cooling through natural circulation if the core is covered.

Even if the nickel alloy piping was ruptured, the coolant itself (pure water) isn't radioactive and the sea water would mix in and provide plenty of cooling for the reactor.

If those reactors were kept covered and natural circulation provided ample cooling, then the reactor probably haven't melted down. And that means the fission products stay within the reactor fuel plate cladding.

FYI sunken Kosomomolets leaking radiation, but not significantly. Unlike, sadly, most nuclear sub losses, we have survivors from this, including one from a miraculous depth. So we, generally, know what happened. I’m impressed by the bravery and effort of her crew in trying to save her. They deserved better than their HQ and Cold War paranoia allowed; many more could have been saved by a call for local help.
