After some thought on the generation gap appearing in today's society, I have decided to reach out to some of you to get a wider dialogue. Here are some basics about me:

- 24 years old (been a Free Republic member since 2014)

- served in the regular Army for five years (Arabic linguist), I've been out for a year

- one more semester of a bachelors' degree in international relations, plan to attend grad school for linguistics in spring, have a few computer science online certificates

- working for now as a rent-a-cop for $12/hr part-time, I live with my father

- I'd like to do some linguistics-related work, interested in Middle Eastern and Caucasian languages specifically. I may want to get into a consultancy role related to data science

- I'd describe myself as a right-leaning nationalist, and not as much a libertarian anymore. Socially, I am more on the conservative side

I can see that point. I’d say a wise form of inheritance the way I am talking about is in real estate (especially now) and securities portfolios, that type of thing. That can be quite a tool.

You're very smart and a thinker. It will take you a while to figure stuff out correctly, though. Intelligence is one thing, wisdom comes with experience and age. Listen to these old timers. They are the teachers, not you. They've been where you're going.

I think there are some distinctions necessary for the conversation. Giving ones children a better foundation is good. Going beyond that is problematic. There is a tremendous amount of subjectivity and individual-case that goes into that. Some people don’t need to go through the struggle. Most young people will find it invaluable in order to have a basis for value later in life, where the drive to produce is invested in them, and where a sense of what the tradeoffs are for an action is gained.

A very large proportion of the current generation of young adults went through a near-decade of parental affluence combined with a dearth of opportunity. Where the young had an abnormally low ability to compete at the lowest levels in many areas of endeavor, combined with a ridiculous level of support with no effort on their own part. Where an appreciation of what can be gained and what it cost and costs was lost.

That excessive support, combined with the blockade to reward, and has caused a lot of the issues with the suspension of reality - not to mention that society is nowhere close to catching up with social media and the proliferation of catered information.

Most who don’t go through the time of struggle end up having a comprehension of the value of other people’s money, and frequently even, those people’s right to it. Enough people aren’t aware even then. (As an aside, I suspect this has a lot to do with Hollywood’s issues on the subject, as their success is so whimsical).

So Dad bought a motorcycle and is now spending  your inheritance  his money on a hottie half his age? Look at the bright side - at his age that motorcycle (or that young piece of ass) will probably kill him before he gets old and medical bills eat up your inheritance.

You're doing well in here young man. Don't let the the outrage your (possibly misunderstood) sense of entitlement brought out discourage you. You are way ahead of where any of us were at your age. TPTB really didn't see the power for self education that the internet was going to enable and now they are going to suffer the consequences of letting your generation see the world as it actually is.

The only advice I have for you is, when the time comes make them pay and make them pay in a way that keeps them from coming back for a long damn time. Well, that and cut your Dad some slack :)

I love my father dearly. He had a father who wrote him out of his live and did his damndest to ensure that not happen to me. It’s taken me over twenty years to fully understand the anguish he suffered in his own life. I just see many of my own, in life and online, suffer from the lack of such a presence.

I went to prep school in Connecticut, and in sixth grade, the one girl who had been exposed to an “open classroom” and “new math” (but not busing) was from Massachusetts. Probably outside of Boston.

That they are. They are also a mechanism for conducting oversees business without giving a greedy government a cut that they had at best a trivial theoretical role in; and a place to keep money the government has no business messing with. And a place to keep resources when ones own government goes crazy, as has happened all too often in history, and which craziness we have many advocates amongst our current congress.

There are both illegitimate and legitimate purposes for off-shore accounts. ...and many domestic politicians who want to grab every cent from the populace also keep their own money off-shore.

That is very different from ‘not providing an inheritance.’ It is a very sad thing. I see a lot of Millennials+ doing the reverse - some even while living in their parent’s house - which is also a very sad thing. I’m seeing some get to the point where they are figuring it out and reversing it, but their parents are now in a different part of their lives and a lot has been lost even after reconnecting.

I’ve also seen a lot of daughters especially go off to college and come back just plain crazy (both functional and diagnostically) - with the rate accelerating *greatly* in the past 5 years.
