The Crimson Tide play Duke (at a neutral site) and host New Mexico State, Southern Mississippi and Western Carolina for their four non-conference games this season. That has led to criticism that they are playing too soft a schedule.
During an appearance Friday on Golic and Wingo, Saban shared his side. The Crimson Tide coach says he has long advocated for Power 5 teams to only play each other. He also says the reason Alabama struggles to schedule strong non-conference opponents is because teams dont want to play the Crimson Tide. Furthermore, he says Alabama ends up playing neutral site games because thats the only way some teams will agree to face the Crimson Tide.

We can thank the 1984 BYU, ahemm...., Nat’l Championship team for light scheduling.
First they played in the weakest, and in those days, WACkiest conference in CFB. Then they played a 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl.
Worst National Champion ever. The 1984 Gators would have crushed them.
Since when did out of state matter? Quality of opponent? Sure. Out of state? No strength of schedule formula takes state lines into account nor should they. Its meaningless.
they slipped midseason with three offensive stars injured. They beat Ariz State and Sanford the day before and go tom second level bowls most year. Rocky Long smart experienced coach and when he retirees they will hire another. UCLA SC don’t want to come near them Excitng that Stanford will play them
as guess you can always drag the bodies off the field, as long as you win.
And closed the season playing fsu every year.
If youre expecting anybody to play toughies every time out of conference youre going to be sorely disappointed. Most of the time youre lucky if a team plays one OOC opponent good enough to finish ranked.
But I must admit it would be fun just for once to see an SEC team play a game in the snow.
Kirby Dar Dar. The guy was from Florida too.
That was a crappy game but it was a good season. I was at UF at the time.
Exactly. The way I see it is, it’s the beginning of the end for the Gump’s domination. Kind of like the way the Seminoles deteriorated after dominating the weak ACC for so long. At the time almost all of the Noles’ games were boring. Now they’re a dumpster fire.
Congrats on being a sacrificial lamb. :^)
Exactly. BYU 1984 was the biggest travesty in college football Ive ever seen. If weak scheduling is going to be rewarded then everybody has an incentive to schedule just as weak as they can.
Thank goodness we have a selection committee now which actually values strength of schedule instead of a bunch of mediots who dont.
Yeah... no disrespect to SDSU intended.
Sheer awesomeness. Lifetime contract for Willie!
I also remember little App State taking down a maize and blue Big 10 team.
I saw that game replayed. I am not even sure it was an upset.
App just looked better. Part of it was I don’t think Michigan was good at defending a running QB.
Well, I'm sure the 'Cats will give defending Patriot League champ Colgate a run for their money that day.
ff
I was referring to their non-confidence schedule full of directional schools and military academies.
You know the old saying, never take a school into your conference if it's named after a city or a direction.
You a Longhorn? You've got to be a Longhorn. That means you laughed when Bevo did to Uga what Texas did to Georgia.
Meatchicken was really bad at that time. It was somewhat masked by the fact that there were only a few good teams in the B1G then, and they got to dodge the ones in the west.
