Union Pacific’s historic Big Boy steam locomotive No. 4014 is touring the Union Pacific system throughout 2019 to commemorate the transcontinental railroad’s 150th anniversary. It will roll into West Chicago around 2:30 this afternoon and will be on display starting Saturday. It will spend a few days hanging out so we can all take all take a look at this piece of American history.t

My Uncle spent his life working for the Santa Fe too. They lived in Topeka. His wife who my Mother really loved, died of Leukemia at a young age.

The engine was sounding its horn every half mile or so as befits a rolling monument. It went off just as it passed us. ‘Bout blew my ears out.

There’s a famous movie of the Big Boys (and the end of the steam locomotive era) put out by Union Pacific in the 50s, called “Last of the Giants”.

I remember watching its smaller sibling, “Challenger” #3985, passing through North Chicago on a special trip years ago. In the flatlands of Illinois, even with a 25+ car train, it was barely breaking a sweat. Still great to see though!

‘Superpower’ steam engine circa 1941

Oil Fired
Roller bearings
Super heaters (for higher steam pressure)
high speed freight 60mph+ (upto 80mph)

772,250-lb engine and 436,500-lb (more than a 747)

To think that jet planes were soon flying when this pinnacle of land steam locos was running freight in America

There were other period steam locomotives that were MORE powerful in HP

Exactly what I thought when I saw the thread title. Been there quite a few times, good burgers. Shoney’s was also where we would go after gigs at 3AM for breakfast buffet in Baton Rouge...

“How big is a full sized green alien?”

This looked to be about 6’. It was a plastic alien leading a plastic horse in the corner of a pasture next to the highway. Pretty cool.
