A university student who won a national award for designing a chair that stops men from manspreading has faced vile rape threats.
Laila Laurel, 23, studying at the University of Brighton, created the piece of furniture to stop men from widening their legs and encroaching on other people's personal space.
In her design, two bits of wood are positioned on the seat to physically stop whoever is sitting down from moving their legs apart.
She received the award last week but says that she has been sent 'unpleasant backlash' since, with men sending explicit photos and rape threats to her Instagram account.
Ms Laurel said: 'I am getting a lot of comments on my Instagram page and lots of people are sending me private messages — mostly men.
'I am just getting a lot of pictures of men's genitals. It isn't nice and it is just bizarre behaviour. I am also getting explicit messages, threatening me about rape.'

According to the “inventor” the woman’s chair is designed to allow them to sit more comfortably (legs apart). That means even women think that sitting with legs apart is more comfortable (even without having male equipment). Doesnt that prove men’s point about their sitting style?
And how would they arrange these chairs — alternate them? What if there is only one feminist chair left, and a man has to sit in it and manspread? How would that affect the womanspreading women next to him? It’s all nonsense.
From what I have seen women need this chair much more than men.
