'I was so livid': Disney heiress visits theme park undercover to see worker conditions
Yahoo Movies UK ^ | July 16, 2019 | Rebecca Corey

As an heiress to the Disney fortune, anything Abigail Disney says about the brand beloved by millions worldwide garners attention.

And she’s calling out Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger for his nearly $66 million yearly salary, saying he isn’t doing enough to rectify the huge gap between his own earnings and that of other Disney workers.

“Bob needs to understand he's an employee, just the same as the people scrubbing gum off the sidewalk are employees,” Disney said during an interview with the Yahoo News show Through Her Eyes.

“And they're entitled to all the same dignity and human rights that he is.”

Iger’s pay check last year was more than 1000 times what the median Disney employee made in 2018, according to Equilar.

To understand the grievances of Walt Disney Co. employees, Abigail Disney said she recently went undercover to Disneyland after receiving a Facebook message from a distressed worker.

She said what she found at The Happiest Place on Earth was a façade that was about to crack from the pressure of making ends meet.

“Every single one of these people I talked to were saying: ‘I don't know how I can maintain this face of joy and warmth when I have to go home and forage for food in other people's garbage’,” she recalled, adding that this was not the work environment her grandfather Roy O. Disney sought out to create.

“I was so livid when I came out of there because, you know, my grandfather taught me to revere these people that take your tickets, that pour your soda,” she continued.

“Those people are much of the recipe for success.”

People smile as they shell out big bucks to stand in line in the sun.

Disney is quite clever.

Of course not. Most CEO’s are pathetic examples of the Peter Principle on steroids.

So Abby, the rich pimple on humanity, thinks the workers should get paid more.

Well I agree. Let’s tax all Democrats at 100% of their net worth (they can keep the clothes they are wearing). We will give them Universal Basic Income and they can work on the border wall - and live in tents. It would be a win / win!

I guess this socialism thing is beginning to rub off on me...

Yes it is expensive. But I have to say all these years later, they still do a hell of a job keeping things rolling. The line thing is far overrated. Most are not bad and they keep rolling and try to entertain you and protect you. Unlike common big amusement parks, which can have you just sit there for a half hour not moving, doing nothing and actually baking in the sun with no protection and no misting stations or fans. Disney does that, and they keep the bathroom lines non-existent (I.e., using paper towels rather than time- and space-wasting “green” air driers).

The union propaganda is that cast isn’t paid much; typically the cast held up as example are temporarily hired cast, and only starting wages are noted. MANY cast top out FAR higher than the $15 an hour starting wage ($17 an hour for stage cast.)

You are largely correct.

I’m shocked they are still great at hospitality despite long being separated from real Disney.

It’s their movies I’m no longer really pleased with.

The latest addition Galaxies Edge is a major flop, Star Wars fans hate it. Its nothing but a high priced gift shop.

If she’d had any gumption maybe she could have been CEO.

It’s easier to throw stones and sit in luxury on vast amounts of money you did nothing to earn.

I have relatives that worked and retired from disney.

Disney ( or The Mouse as they are called) are very frugal when it comes to employee pay except for top name movie talent, CEOs and high executives. Routine park employees make just slightly over min wage. But they do get free park admission. And by the way disney hires mostly part timers. Few people are hired for 8 hours a day. Entertainment staff are treated slightly better on contracts.

The notion that disney employees called cast members are well paid is incorrect. Newspaper stories hve been done showing that a number of employees sleep in their car at night because it is cheaper than commuting.

The story she tells of every employee having to rummage thru garbage cans for food is obviously nonsense however.

1980’s pay at Disneyland was little more than minimum wage.

Average 3rd shift employee (night cleaning crew, landscaping, maintenance) pay was 24.34 an hour in the last union documents. Average on stage cast (attractions, parade, crowd control, etc) is 23.22 an hour. Average gate & parking cast is 21.20 an hour. Average hourly pay worker hours per week was 36.7 hours for 3rd shift, stage cast & security/parking.

It ain’t the 1980’s anymore.
