Question:

When is the best time to apply fertilizer? During planting, during flowering, or during growth of fruit and vegetables?

As I expected, we're swamped with tomatoes and cukes. The tomatoes will go into pasta sauce. Cukes—don't have a home.

Paprikas and the Rezha peppers are kicking out.
The little dehumidifier is doing double duty !

We stopped by the local farmers market out of habit. Sweet onions were $1/pound. Mennonites were doing suspender-snapping business.

Even after the vicious hailstorm last week, my 2 little yellow crookneck squash plants are still with me, even the one that got broken off at the ground! Spotted tiny flower buds on the other plant, so... Tomatoes fared well, even in the hail, and are on the east side of the house, loaded with fruit and flowers. Chose Big Boy and Better Boy this year, just as an experiment.

Does anyone else use a greenhouse in conjunction with their garden?

Do you use a heater in it and go year round?

Summer weather has finally arrived here in Central Missouri. We’ve gone a whole week without rain, and are enjoying daytime high temps in the 90s.

I started digging garlic last week, but it was too stinking hot to suit me, so I stopped. Staying ahead of the japanese beetles is impossible. I kill ten million, and ten million more pop out of thin air.

My garden is a giant weed patch right now and I’m not the least bit motivated to do anything about it. I had intended to switch over to raised beds for this season, but the ridiculously wet spring prevented that from happening. Mrs. Augie insisted on cucumbers and tomatoes so I put some in for her, but she’s not very interested in pulling weeds either. lol

Next year will be better.

Peppers starting to ripen here in Spain.

Note: if the images appear to be sideways just right-click on either one you want to see and choose Open image in new tab and it will do just that, appear in the correct orientation but in its own tab.

For those that are interested, these peppers are called Naga Brain Yellow. I grow about 30 or so different varieties in pots on our terrace.

Good evening here! My tomatoes cannot grow fast enough for me and the same for the cucumbers. Picking fresh basil however and use them in sandwiches. Stay safe and hydrated in this sweltering summer!

Wednesday, July 17, 2019:

Finally getting some production here and there with Zukes and Cukes. Bush and Pole beans are finally flowering. Lots of tomatoes on, only a few cherry-types are ready to eat, though.

Supper tonight is pretty much all from the garden:

Chicken & Cheese Stuffed Zucchini Boats
Steamed New Potatoes with Butter and Chives
Cucumbers in Sour Cream and Dill Salad
Sweet Corn (bought, but LOCAL!)

I will cook all but the salad in the Microwave and will boil the corn on the stovetop. High heat and high humidity - waiting for a thunderstorm right now. Heat Advisory through the entire weekend, then cooler next week - back into the 70’s which will be HEAVEN!

I watered the garden for the FIRST TIME yesterday - had to ask Beau if he had seen the Owner’s Manual so I could re-learn how to use a hose, LOL! (He just rolled his eyes, as always!)

And then, we got 1 & 1/4 inches of unexpected rain last night! Figures!

I am still a long ways off from any major canning of anything. And, I can wait for a break in the heat, for sure!
