Metal straws may be eco-friendly, but a coroner has warned of the potential dangers they pose after a woman in England died last year in a freak accident.
Elena Struthers-Gardner, 60, sustained a traumatic brain injury after falling while carrying a mason jar-styled drinking glass that had a screw-top lid at her home in Dorset on Nov. 22, an inquest heard on Monday.
Struthers-Gardner's death was ruled an accident, with a coroner's report noting that "clearly great care" should be taken when using metal straws.
"There is no give in them at all," Assistant coroner Brendan Allen said, according to The Sun. "If someone does fall on one and its pointed in the wrong direction, serious injury can occur."
When Struthers-Gardner fell, officials said the 10-inch metal straw pierced through her eye and into her brain.
Elena's wife, Mandy, told the hearing she found her partner lying in a doorway between the kitchen and living room, The Sun reported.
"She was making unusual gurgling sounds. Her glass cup was lying on the floor still intact and the straw was still in the jar," she said Monday. "I noticed the straw was sticking into her head."
She was rushed to a hospital, but doctors told her partner the severity of her injury made it very unlikely Struthers-Gardner would survive. Her life support was eventually switched off.
The 60-year-old was a retired jockey and had mobility difficulties stemming from a horse-riding accident.
Her wife said the riding accident caused multiple fractures to Struthers-Gardner's lumbar spine and caused scoliosis, which left her prone to falling over "like a sack of potatoes" randomly," according to the Daily Mail.

You mean the woman who thinks she is (was) her wife.
Some Freepers’ ideas to justify avoiding change are often more outlandish than ideas the left uses to force it in the first place. Steel straws are, indeed, easier to wash than reusable plastic ones and not significantly more dangerous than the average stick but, by all means, Freepers keep freaking out over them!
I love the steel straws. My guests think they are really cool, even cooler than the little umbrellas I put next to the straw.
They also have a bigger diameter than most straws, and Margaritas and other blender drinks flow through them much easier.
Over the long haul, they will end up being cheaper than disposable straws to boot.
To each his own, but for me, they are brilliant.
No plastic was used in the commission of this event.
Yeah these are not a good idea. I have one in a cup on my night stand and have damn near broken my teeth trying to get the straw at night.
Yikes. Brain core.
This is why plastic straw bans should be banned. Here we have the ban’s first victim.
If it saves just one life...
SWMBO tell me that she knows the lady who chipped her tooth on one.
I wouldn’t use them, but I recall back in the 60s we had wax paper straws and they worked just fine except on a real thick milkshake and they collapsed. I don’t drink milkshakes anymore.
“Drunk last night, drunk the night before, gonna get drunk tonight like I’ve never been drunk before...”
I loathe that Witch!
“Not surprisingly, knives are as effective as metal straws when jammed into an eye.”
You should see what can be done with a Ticonderoga No. 2 Pencil!
“Army Training, Sir!” ;)
When DID people start drinking everything through a straw? Has everyone lost their teeth and tongues? Is it Starbucks? PLEASE let it be Starbucks, LOL! Smoothie Franchises? WHAT?
I don’t get it, but then I don’t do Fast Food on any sort of regular basis.
I’d be in SERIOUS trouble if someone took away my Steak Knife - but then, they’d be pulling away a bloody stump if they tried, LOL!
ban the straw!!
P.S.
“...than ideas the left uses to force it in the first place.”
Um...IF it’s a Good Idea, a Free Market Person will supply what is needed.
If it is FORCED upon us by Leftist FOOLS, then, Yes.
Mockery is mandatory. :)
How do you drink a milkshake without a straw?
I remember as a kid when glass straws were used in hospitals, and theyre available again. However I want the sterling silver plated metal straws they have at Londons Fortnum & Mason. Nothing but the best for me!
(I love my Yeti tumblers of various sizes and two new Yeti bottles, my Trader Joes cloth bags, and the new reusable vegetable bags. Im no envirowacko but a conservative who wouldnt want to waste stuff.)
Really?
Whos freaking out over plastic straws as destroying the earth?
Some of us with a brain knows they arent the problem.
At least they are biodegradable.
Ironically, it was the environmentalists that replaced paper straws and paper grocery bags with plastic straws and plastic grocery bags. To save the environment, they said.
Now plastic straws and plastic grocery bags are being banned across America because they damage the environment. Oops!
Unintended consequences of stupid liberal ideas.
Sumerians and beer... 5000 years ago!

You can use a spoon! I make Smoothies at home all the time, we use a spoon if it’s too thick.
Who would’ve thought that in FUTURE WORLD straws were such a handicap to people being able to drink liquids, LOL!
But, I may stand corrected. Some uses for straws make TOTAL sense long, long ago:
“According to scientist, Sumerian used straws to drink their beer which was prepared in very simple fermentation cases that forced the solid byproducts to sink to the bottom, and leave drinkable fluid on top.”

“In the ruins of the Sumerian cities and tombs, archeologist managed to find straws made from gold and the precious stone lapis lazuli. These expensive 3000 BC artifacts can give us the proof that the more simple designs were used far earlier than that, most probably created from carved wood or natural hollow plants.”
If I’m gonna die, I want to die on a GOLD straw!
LOL! Post right after yours! :)
