Pundits repeatedly asked whether the facts that his father was Kenyan and from a Muslim background, his mother was white, and he'd been raised partly in Indonesia would hamper his appeal to African American voters. Defending him was Harris, then San Francisco's district attorney and an early Obama supporter.
