Over the past decades, the idea that all adults should get regularly screened for cancerwith mammograms, colonoscopies and prostate specific antigen blood testshas been conveyed to the public time after time. But current clinical guidelines recommend against screening many older adults, such as those with less than 10 years' life expectancy. For doctors, talking to a patient about the idea that they've "aged out" of cancer screening can be a challenging conversation.
Now, to better inform these conversations, Johns Hopkins researchers have studied the perspectives of both clinicians and older adults on how to communicate about stopping cancer screening. The results of this study were published in the June 2019 issue of The Gerontologist. In a separate study, other Johns Hopkins researchers also show that primary care doctors and specialists are equally likely to continue to order mammograms in women with less than 10 years' life expectancy.
"As we gain more scientific evidence, cancer screening is shifting to be more tailored to an individual, and for the elderly that means don't screen if the patient really won't benefit from it," says Nancy Schoenborn, M.D., associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and lead author of the two new papers. "These new findings help us learn how we can better support clinicians and improve patient care when it comes to personalizing cancer screening."
...the screening methods also come with a cost; the U.S. health care system spends an estimated $7.8 billion on mammograms each year.
Studies have found that cancer screening in adults with limited life expectancy can present unnecessary risks and lead to unnecessary treatments.

Absolutely! They are considered the Elite. It is the peons and serfs they are out to eliminate.
In 10 years (3 if we have a democrat president) the question will be: “What kind of music do you want to hear during your Life Exit Procedure?”
Ive seen the warning signs developing for years now. We are rapidly approaching a time when the government will say well youve reached the end of your useful life, you are a burden on the rest of society. Its your duty to take these pills and die.
They want us disarmed for this, as they know there are a lot who wont go gentle into that good night.
Ive seen quite a few in the millennial crowd say things like everyone over age 75 should be put down, they dont contribute anything.
Do you think for a second that the think for the moment, its all
About ME generation wont gladly adopt government policies like this?
Doctors are already refusing to treat people at a certain stage of illness and dumping them in hospice where they can be ODed on morphine.
Now they are talking about refusing certain care options for the old.
This is what devaluing human life brings.
So its here, how do we get ahead of it, if we know where this ends? Why does our side always fight the battle when the mandated killing starts and it is engrained in the society, rather than predicting that 10 or 15 years from now the mandated killing will start are getting ahead of it before it becomes an entrenched policy.
If we had pushed a marriage amendment in 1996, rather than in 2004, we could have had it. We are always 10 years late to the battle.
nailed it
You are right. 10-15 years. So how do we get ahead of
It NOW.
They want to get rid of us OLD FOLK to make way for YOUNG ILLEGAL FOLK.
ROTFLMAO
Odds are good that one of the married couple will live into their 90’s. Makes sense to continue doctor appointments into your 90’s as well.
The Dems are preparing for single payor, and when you inevitably ration healthcare then people in their 70’s and 80’s will be discouraged from seeking preventative screenings.
This is preposterous. They are just trying to save Medicare $.
If people don’t get screened, don’t get treatment, just hurry up and die, it saves Medicare $.
Have they decided to get the quacks to stop talking to you about your vast gun collections?
I am 86 and stopped all cancer screening 4/5 years ago. It was my decision, the doctor did not suggest it.
I noticed that right after Obamacare was introduced, these studies were starting to conclude that it is not worth doing testing or treatments.
Of course that all saves money and if people hurry up and die, that saves even more money.
As a 40-something this really doesnt affect me but WTF????
Theyre old anyway so lets just let them die to save a few bucks?????
Thats a sickening mentality. Its one thing if the person has a terminal condition and wont benefit from the medical treatment but to just write them off and not bother screening is incomprehensible. That cheapens human life.
Chet99 did all those dog bite threads.
That got old, years before he left.
There’s already some rationing after a certain age.
A friend was treated for cancer many years ago and had a follow up check every five years thereafter, covered by insurance/Medicare.
These checks ceased to be paid by Medicare once he turned 80.
Have you lost your baby teeth yet?
And there it is, buried pretty deep. They want to find a way to tell people nicely that they are better off dead than spending insurance company of government money. Eventually the government won't worry about the "nicely" part and they will just be told: no health care for you, grey hair!
SOYLENT Green,,,
When insurance cos tell people they won’t finance a treatment people go nuts. What will happen when its the government saying it? It’s what I’ve never understood about the NHS and how popular it is even though they don’t have nearly the degree of care Americans demand from private insurance olans
