Colin Kaepernick has been slammed for using chunks of Frederick Douglass' famous Fourth of July address on Twitter to criticize police brutality and claim racism in America without including the sections of his speech where he told of his love of country and hope for the future.
The controversial former San Francisco 49ers shared a video on Twitter on Thursday in which parts of Douglass' lengthy 1852 speech were orated over a montage of slavery depictions and videos of police shooting unarmed African Americans.
He tweeted beneath it: 'What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? This Fourth of July is yours, not mine...
'There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of these United States at this very hour.'

The failed footballer is an idiot.
The only reason anyone pays him any attention is because Nike pays him millions.
Boycott the swoosh.
What does that make the people running Nike, eh?
[[’There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of these United States at this very hour.’]]
I give you the arrogant ignorance of the snowflake generation.
Well said.
He’s just as good at it as he is at football.
Notice the BRITISH press is telling the truth about this fifth rate celebrity. American media is too terrified.
He is nothing new for the left. Just toss out half truths and out right lies. Then move on.
Exactly, with 1 or 2 exceptions you will not find this story in a US news outlet.
No worries. Inner-city thugs and white suburbanites will still pay $250 for a pair of shoes that cost Nike only $5 to make.
What an absolutely moronic and ignorant statement.
Can you hear that Colin , Africa is a calling you
Interesting from the guy who makes millions from sneakers produced by slave labor in communist countries.
Waiting for him to pay reparations....
“..This Fourth of July is yours, not mine....”
Yup.
You’re Absolutely Right, Kap. It IS Ours, for AMERICANS, and has ZERO to do with you and those that think like you.
So GTFO and go to some other place more suited to your mentality.
We won’t miss you. And we sure as Hell don’t need you.
The Colon is suffering from #Ameriphobia, the irrational hatred of America.
“Colin Kaepernick is slammed..” Passive tense.
Sen. Ted Cruz slammed him. Active tense.
Cruz schooled him by citing Frederick Douglass’s entire quote.
Douglass did indeed despair of slavery, then pointed to *America* herself, its glorious Declaration of Independence, the *American* abolitionist movement, as the only place in the world where slaves had any means to escape slavery.
If you want to think that I really don't care. My ancestors weren't even here for the most part and I embrace Independence Day fully. Some of my ancestors may have been shot by Colonials and I still embrace Independence Day fully.
I'm sure we can all go back to a time period where our ancestors were enslaved and victimized, but the majority of us have moved on.
He gives the negative stereotype of the typical jock a bad name. One suspects he has no idea the quote was part of a speech, because he wasn’t so informed by his controllers. It would be instructive to review his college major, and his history of actually attending classes and test taking.
