CONEY ISLAND San Jose resident and record-breaking competitive eater Joey Chestnut has done it again eating 71 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes Thursday to retain his title as champion of the Nathans Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest. It was his 12th title overall.
Chestnut fell short of his world record last year of 74 hot dogs. He was aiming for a new record, having consumed 75 hot dogs in a practice round.
But he handily beat the runner-up, Darron Breedon, who wolfed down 50 frankfurters.

I heard it’s real messy when a massively overfilled stomach ruptures.
He is a machine. Nicely done.

I always worry about what they’re doing to their bodies - and I wonder how many have almost died of choking.
But really .........how does he fit all that in his stomach??
The best I could do at Nathans is three dogs, an order of fries and a brew, and that was after drinking all night! Amazing what we did at 18 y/o!!
I'm just curious why the huge discrepancy. Are women's stomachs that much smaller?
I have no idea why the large difference. It wasn’t that long
ago the the male record was much lower. Chestnut has really
moved the bar in the last 12 years.

There’s a handful of eaters who do. Matt Stonie, in particular, as he was one of the first to setup a youtube channel for challenges conducted in his own kitchen.
I believe he has about 8 million followers at this point. What’s funny is watching his kitchen change from the early challenges (4 years ago) to the recent ones. He’s definitely moved up the financial ladder.
Some of his best challenges are “full menu” in which he eats one of each menu item from popular fast food chains.
