The Lack of Gentle Platonic Touch in Men's Lives is a Killer
The Good Men Project ^ | June 2018 | Mark Greene

Posted on 07/01/2019 12:06:35 PM PDT by CondoleezzaProtege

In American culture, we believe that men can never be entirely trusted in the realm of the physical. We collectively suspect that, given the opportunity, men will collapse into the sexual at a moment’s notice. That men don’t know how to physically connect otherwise. That men can’t control themselves. That men are dogs.

There is no corresponding narrative about women.

And where does this leave men? Physically and emotionally isolated. Cut off from the deeply human physical contact that is proven to reduce stress, encourage self esteem and create community. Instead, we walk in the vast crowds of our cities alone in a desert of disconnection. Starving for physical connection.

How often do men actually get the opportunity to express affection through long lasting platonic touch? How often does it happen between men? Or between men and women? Not a hand shake or a hug, but lasting physical contact between two people that is comforting and personal but not sexual. Between persons who are not lovers and never will be. Think, holding hands. Or leaning on each other. Sitting together...And if you are a man, imagine a five minutes of contact with another man. How quickly does that idea raise the ugly specter of homophobia? And why?

I doubt its a question the average Italian man would ever ask himself. But here in America, generations of Puritanical sexual shaming have made it a central question. By putting the fear of the sexual first in all our interactions, we have thrown out the baby with the bathwater, avoiding all contact rather than risk even the hint of unwanted sexual touch.

American culture leaves boys few options. While aggression on the basketball court or bullying in the locker room often results in sporadic moments of human contact, gentleness likely does not...

any and ALL threads that involve any woman will devolve into our resident adolescent male freepers limiting the discussion to "guilty" or "not guilty".....

maybe its because they have very low self esteem and think they need to act like macho men at every turn, but it really happens....

Chris watts, the guy who killed his wife and then his two little girls and stuffed them into oil tanks was shown in an interview.....he became comepletely unhinged when the cops told them that they would start looking for the bodies at his work.....he had more angst over his buddies seeing him with the cops looking for the bodies then the actual killing of his pregnant wife and his little dtrs....

men seek to impress other men....thus they do actually devolve into the gutter....

When I asked, I didn’t know. That’s why I asked.

But I read the rest of the thread, so now I know.

Given current workplace issues (sexual harassment and the like), you were probably right to keep your hands to yourself. In todays world, I wouldn’t want a hug from any coworker, under any circumstances, regardless of said coworker’s sex. It’s just not prudent.

In a better world, you might have been able to do differently.

Neal: See that Bears game last week?
Del: Yeah. Hell of a game. Hell of a game.
Neal: Bears got a great team this year. They're gonna go all the way.

LOL! I think it's a game men play to compensate for certain interpersonal inadequacies.

I don't mind it; it's a result of culture. But it's nice when you encounter a man who understands that the ego isn't the heart, and allows the heart to rule now and then.

Because we’re not women. And we don’t want to be.

I think I love you, Ironjack.

Hold me.

Ahahahahahahahahahaha.

Um...if you want to associate with women, we certainly WILL tell you, from time to time, what’s OK for you to do.

(We’ll also tell you, incessantly, what you OUGHT to do ;-)

Deal. Or buy a blow-up doll.

Fine, Jamestown.

Just so long as you confine your "teachings" to how we interact with you (women).

It appears from your posts that you don't understand men very well so it would be bad juju for you to advise men on how they should act toward other men.

This long, slow descent into the feminization of men is detrimental to human advancement, as you should know. So please stop assisting in its advance.

Let men be men and women be women.

In other words, stay in your lane.

p.s. I'm glad you chose not to hug that guy from your work. It was bad enough he got publically punked by his boss. He didn't need to be further humiliated by you treating him like a child/victim.

"Why can't a woman, be more like a man."

After thirty years of observing people across all 50 states, I have concluded that if you could actually perform a 100% accurate survey tracking people from 15 to 50, you would find that by the time the subjects reached 50, the average woman have had far more sexual encounters with far more partners than the average man.

Because younger women have limitless opportunity. I read a while back about the (truthful) average number of sexual partners at the age of marriage: for men it was seven, for women, thirteen.

Sometimes a man is *asking*, wordlessly, for a woman’s consolation. I think I understood that man entirely, and I really regret that I didn’t have the sense and courage at the moment to answer him appropriately.

Being emotionally honest when it is appropriate is NOT ‘feminization’ - it’s HUMAN.

I don’t want men to be like women - I want them to be their AUTHENTIC selves, and not the inhibited, restricted, ego-driven asses that the culture has so often forced them to be.

Come on - you’re up to it. Unless you’re afraid...

Yes you do.

I want them to be their AUTHENTIC selves, and not the inhibited, restricted, ego-driven asses that the culture has so often forced them to be.

This "forcing culture" you speak of is thousands of years of social evolution and nature and you seek to overturn it and turn men into something that complies with your personal sense of how things should be.

Why is it important for men to transform into something "you want them to be"?

How did you become the arbiter of how men "should be"?

The fact is, the ripple effect of monkeying with something as basic as male nature and masculinity can and is devastating to the future of the human race.

Perhaps you feminists should mind your own business and get back to being the best women YOU can be.

You seem to have a very materialistic notion of what men are supposed to ‘be’.

Do you think men are just made from evolution and Nature? Or do you believe that they have an ultimate spiritual source, and evolve in other ways than just from the material?

It seems to me that our more spiritual approaches to our reality - especially the one Way that has had the greatest impact on civilization as we know it today- have seen Man as something much more than the result of ‘social evolution’ and mere ‘nature’.

Alright I need to state a truth.

All this macho complaining about “feminization of men” is bogus.

Have news for you: our very cultural background of CHRISTIANITY started this “feminization”. Men of western - Christian - culture are much kinder and gentler and fairer than other cultures, by its demands.

Or are you saying men should be the full-throated “masculine” stereotype of cut-throat heartless blowhard tyrants allowed and demanded by other religions?

Sorry, I don’t want that.
