National Park Service acting director P. Daniel Smith faces plenty of looming priorities this summer, from an $11 billion backlog in maintenance needs to natural disasters like the recent wildfire damage to Big Bend Park.
But in recent days, another issue has competed for Smith’s attention: how to satisfy President Trump’s request to station tanks or other armored military vehicles on the Mall for his planned Fourth of July address to the nation.
The ongoing negotiations over whether to use massive military hardware, such as Abrams tanks or Bradley Fighting Vehicles , as a prop for Trump’s “Salute to America” is just one of many unfinished details when it comes to the celebration planned for Thursday, according to several people briefed on the plan, who requested anonymity to speak frankly.
Trump — who has already ordered up a flyover by military aircraft including Air Force One — is also interested in featuring an F-35 stealth fighter and involvement from Marine Helicopter Squadron One, which flies the presidential helicopter, two government officials aid. The Navy’s Blue Angels were supposed to have a break between a performance in Davenport, Iowa on June 30 and one in Kansas City, Mo. on July 6, but will now be flying in D.C. on the Fourth.
At least 300 service members were slated to participate, primarily from military bands and drill teams, but that number could rise as additional military aircraft and other flourishes are added to the event.
The Defense Department has not released any estimate for how much the celebration could cost. But the use of numerous aircraft could drive it well into the millions when counting fuel and maintenance.
The F-35 costs about $30,000 per hour to fly, according to Pentagon estimates. Each Blue Angel jet costs at least $10,000 per hour....

Bradley Fighting Vehicles
The America that we know will cease to exist once DJT leaves office. By then decent people will be fully replaced by the vermin crawling over the border. We’ll be forced to fight to survive, with some choosing to take a knee rather than resist. The constitution will afford no protection to someone like me, and I don’t expect any.

I don’t have a problem with the tanks. Let’s give our ground troops some attention. The flyboys get too much comparatively speaking.
Overall a tank fleet certainly is cheaper to maintain than an aircraft fleet.
I’m glad the title says “military tanks”, I really didn’t want to put that many miles on mine.
Whatever happens is personally fine with me. We should always honor our servicemen and vets.
But I like that Trump has limited the ‘extravagances’ seen by previous admins, and if this runs up a tab, it just feeds the MSM. Fundamentally I am of the opinion that while we have the finest military in the world, we are better served by not looking ‘Tiananmen square’, again because the left will label Trump as a fascist and use photos of tanks in the streets as talking points.
Finally, since I am retired Navy, I think if we cant parade a battleship, then the army cant have a tank. :)
I bet that if President Trump sent out a call for volunteers, at least a dozen Shermans would show up, and probably some Willy’s and a Stuart or two.
(And if we’re lucky, a Hellcat sighting would be dandy)

I live near Aberdeen Proving Grounds. It’s not unusual to see tanks and other very heavy equipment, often under tarps on the freeway heading in or out.
Newsflash to the weenies, they’re not going to drive them down the freeway, instead they will unload them just like they do a Cat excavator.

Probably about as much as it will cost for Air Force One to fly over the mall on Thursday.
I was asking because if you remember, when Obama was seated in the White House, he took a few people on a tour of NYC to take pictures from AF1.
