Someone breaks into my house you can take seconds to retrieve your gun or seconds to dial 911, what are you going to do?
For me I call 911 for medical emergencies, or to request a hearse to pick up the body of the intruder, or to report a fire.

The homeowner is told to unload his gun and put it in a safe place. He is told that when he hears police to go out the “west” (front) door and let the officers see his hands. He's supposed to disarm himself when there could be another burglar in the house?
