I heard it’s pronounced Balmer.

Drive at night.

Leave early enough to arrive by noon.

“..I must make a recon of the Baltimore area where I want to move,..”

That’s your only option in the USA?

If you can take Amtrak out of Penn Station, that'd be my vote.

If you're driving, if you left at sunrise, your trip from the NJ Turnpike to Beltway traffic should be smooth. The Beltway will be murder...unless someone has a better plan that doesn't involve the FAA.

Posting this now from a Service Area on the NJ Turnpike on the way back down to Annapolis. It isn’t a bad drive most times of day, but if at all possible, avoid arriving in the Baltimore/DC area 8-10a or 3-6p.

Good luck, and congrats!

Mid-morning, you’ll be going against the flow escaping NYC.

The New Jersey Turnpike is, generally, free-flowing from 10:00 a.m. ‘til 3:00 p.m.

The Delaware Memorial Bridge is under construction. There will be delays there anytime.

If you’re headed to a Baltimore suburb that’s northeast of the city, you’ll be OK. If you have to drive through the city to get where you’re going, prepare to sit in traffic.

There are some good apps for navigation and traffic:

WAZE and Here WeGo

Try either or both.

Have a great trip, and good luck!

If you could, your best option would be going down early Sunday morning.

If you MUST go on a weekday, then try leaving NYC early enough to have you arrive there by 6am, thus missing traffic.

Gram Parsons - Streets of Baltimore
https://youtu.be/8V4NoboSq6w
I sold the farm to take my woman where she longed to be
We left our kin and all our friends back there in Tennessee
I bought those one way tickets she had often begged me for
And they took us to the streets of Baltimore
Her heart was filled with laughter when she saw those city lights
She said the prettiest place on earth is Baltimore at night
Oh well a man feels proud to give his woman what she’s longing for
And I kind of liked the streets of Baltimore
Well I got myself a factory job I ran an old machine
I bought a little cottage in a neighborhood serene
Yet every night when I came home with every muscle sore
She would drag me through the streets of Baltimore
Well I did my best to bring her back to what she used to be
But I soon learned she loved those bright lights much more than she loved me
Now I’m a going back on that same train that brought me here before
While my baby walks the streets of Baltimore
Yes my baby walks the streets of Baltimore

It depends on what side of town you are going. “Out near the beltway” isn’t far enough out anymore.

You are going to be 4 hours on the road. NJ turnpike to Delaware memorial bridge (exit 1) or I-295 and avoid Pennsylvania & Philadelphia traffic.

If you leave Queens & drive to NJ, on workday, suggest you start per your local knowledge after rush-hour, aprox 10am,
Avoid Phila traffic, pass Wilmington/Newark Del about 12:30pm, You are at Baltimore beltway at 2:00 pm.

Otherwise leave after your local rush hour, approx. 7pm and arrive at 11 pm

Are you in your 50s or 60s? If yes, I'd look at retirement criteria for any location you choose. A couple weeks ago, a "Worst Places to Retire" review was published and Maryland was the #1 WORST retirement place in the entire country.

Even if you are not near retirement, Baltimore and Maryland are about the most corrupt, most Democrat, and highest-taxed places in the nation.

You must have strong family ties or career reasons for thinking about Maryland! We chose Idaho last year, but our family roots here go back to the 1920s.

The Worst States for Retirement in 2019
by Esther Trattner, June 6, 2019, MoneyWise

Maryland is steeped in history and culture; it offers great golfing, mountains, beaches; and you're never far from a major population center. So why is it the worst place for your retirement?

First, your scenic drive to the beach might be ruined by some of the most congested roads in the country, or a surprise tornado, or a winter storm blasting in off the Atlantic.

As a retirement destination, both Bankrate and Kiplinger rank Maryland the No. 48 state, and WalletHub ranks it No. 41 — adding up to our high score of 137 out of a possible 150.

You could find your retirement savings demolished by the state's high cost of living (17% above average), its taxes on IRAs, and its above-average health care costs. "Retirees in Maryland are bound to be crabby," Kiplinger says — and it's no wonder.

NYC to Baltimore?

From the frying pan into the fire.

What in the world are you thinking?

There are other places just as bad to live but none any worse.

And all you're concerned about is what highway to take and what hours to drive?

You've got bigger problems than just the logics in getting there, trust me.

Shaking my head in disbelief.
