Is Canada the promised land? One American thinks it comes close
Globe and Mail ^ | June 28, 2019 | Lawrence Karol

I am a recovering American. This is a major admission on my part. Since moving to Canada in 2017, I’ve kept this part of my identity hidden from everyone except my closest friends. It’s a fairly easy sleight-of-hand. I’ve lived in various parts of the United States so I’m not easily pegged by any regionally-identifiable accent. The rest was simply a matter of a few linguistic somersaults: saying washroom instead of restroom; parkade, not parking lot; chatting at dinner parties about stratas rather than condo boards; and casually ordering deli meats by the gram (thanks to the conversion app on my phone). And to my utter delight, if my dirty little secret is revealed the universal response has been: “You’re American? But you seem so nice!”

To address the elephant in the room – quite literally, I suppose, since it’s the mascot of the Republican Party – yes, the tipping point for my relocation was the 2016 presidential election. Yet, I wasn’t one of those people who wrote angry Facebook posts and threatened to leave the country if Hillary Clinton didn’t win. That seemed overly dramatic – until, well, until the unimaginable actually happened.

I know some of my American friends think I took the easy route – the coward’s path, if you will. To the people who question my decision, I respond, “Do you really think it’s that easy to just pick up and leave the country where you were born and lived your entire life?” But the day after the election – and this is actually hard to really put into words – I just felt a seismic shift in my overall sense of well-being and thought, “I’ve got to get out of here.”

He would get one reaction in Vancouver but a completely different reaction in Calgary.

We probably didn’t need to bother. Amarillo sees so few Canadians, we could talked like Scots and been just fine. ;)

So he hated LIEberal California culture fostered by DemoRat control and policies of which he voted for. Flees to Canada because boogeyman Trump got elected and that casted foreboding, ominous fear not based on facts. Too bad this demented Rat didn’t grab more millions like him and flee north too.

Canadians’ psychological defense against living next to the giant United States is sanctimony: “at least we are nicer than they are!”

I know Toronto very well. The older parts of the city are OK, but most of the area is a faceless, cheap, urban sprawl. Certainly in Toronto area, people are not at all “nice,” it being a large city, very expensive, hugely flooded with immigrants - and thus has no overriding character at all, except post-modernism and domineering globalist/leftist sloganeering. Canadians are heavily taxed, which makes many of them poorer than they should be, and personally, I don’t think their vaunted health-care system is that great - at least not according to my friends’ whose parents are waiting for hip replacements or heart stents.

I certainly love parts of Canada, its overall an advanced country, and have many friends there, but I’m tired of the lies and self-righteousness one gets from people like this author.

We work the fair in Lynden, WA and get a lot of Canadian customers, or at least to...their attendance fluctuates with the Loonie... Just like us Americans, some are very nice, some are awlfully ride and others inbetween.

I like joking with Canadians saying they sit up there...watching us...stealing our television signals and sending us bad comedians... An obvious joke that some take very seriously...Ha!

I always remember, that Canada were those British that fled the Colonies, not wanting to be part of that Freedom Train...

But then Western Canada is different than the eastern part. Much like the U.S.

Out in the west, people had to tame the wilderness filled with mountains, forests and rugged frontiers...It takes a determined individual to scratch life out of the ground and make something of it...Some of that rugged frontierism still exists, as well as it does in the Western U.S. Although it is being diluted.

Sadly, others that promised this move reneged on that promise. Hopefully they’ll follow through for PDJT’s second term.

The Toronto Glob and Snail is , like most of Canada, so erroneously smug when it comes to comparing itself to the USA.

Canadians are so dopey that they do not comprehend that they have no guaranteed rights of free speech, no right to purchase or keep firearms, little or no right to self defense against assault, break and enter or theft of property. All rights one would have in the USA are in Canada highly regulated privileges which are almost useless.

In short Canadians are little better than cattle in their own draconian country, with a government controlled monopoly CBC propaganda news network, subsidized by tax payer money.Canadians are made to pay for their own fake news.

Canada has lived under a burgeoning socialist government ever since the term of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his “Quiet Revolution” 1970 onward.

If you really want to know how the Dem Socialist traitors to America will pay for their free hand-outs, just look to Canada where the socialists have been in power for over 40 years, elected via government hand out mentality.

Right now Canada and its provinces have has an effective combined 17% GST on processed goods, and a national carbon tax on fuel. The Canadian economy can’t really get off the ground to develop without government “subsidies.”The government controls everything and government is the largest employer in Canada when you include the various Crown Corporations created by Canadian federal and provincial government.

And still these Socialists in Canada have not screwed working men and women quite enough. They simply PRINT more money so they will have it to “spend” on their “free” hand outs. That’s what the Dems will do here. They will print more and more US dollars to have the money to spend on their giveaways, diluting the US dollar to a former shadow of itself, and destroying the US dollar as the worlds reserve currency, handing the reserve currency world wide status over to China.

There is NOTHING at all good about these nationalist socialist , liberal fascist “give aways.” They are actually treasonous activity, designed to destroy our US entrepreneurial, capitalist culture and our world wide economic dominance. We do not want the USA to become Canada
as the Globe and Snail article of this thread suggests.

The only thing good about living in Canada would be the 136 % exchange rate from USD to CD.

Canada is essentially NOT a place a real patriotic American who understands the US Constitution and the pursuit of happiness would want to live. Canada simply is not a free country. Canada is a Great Pretender run by a collective of ideologically driven smug liberal fascists.

Sorry, Americans are not going to be lining up to migrate to Canada any time soon. That’s merely wishful thinking. Hell, most Americans now do not even wantrto visit Canada anymore since the early 1970s US tourism of Canada has been in decline.

I lived in Lynden for 3 years after retirement, being priced out of Seattle.

My classical music venues were in Vancouver, so I got to talk to a lot of the artsy types across the border. No one held my nationality against me.

I never had a problem with Canadians who came into Lynden to shop. I could kid them about their colorful money.

But then Western Canada is different than the eastern part. Much like the U.S.

Culturally, neighboring US states and their Canadian counterparts have more in common with each other than their east-west orientated populations.

The western provinces, BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba could become states. Ontario would remain as the nation of Canada, while Quebec and the eastern provinces would become French Canada. Though without transfer payments from Ottawa, provinces like PEI, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland, maybe even New Brunswick, would become economic basket cases that even the northeastern US states would take a pass on.

You’re rid of him, but we need him like a hole in the head. He would fit in well up here - anyone who hates America and follows the left-wing b.s. is Canadian at heart. Sadly.
