Chickensoup had a computer crash this spring. The beloved WIN7 and Outlook 2003 died a horrible death on the trusty Acer.
Heartbroken the soup discovered there was no replacing this faithful companion.
Soup needed a computer quickly and purchased a temporary HP from Staples. Win10 in all its gory. Also purchased a yearly MS package that includes Outlook, since this is to be a temporary computer.
All of the businesses that the soup have have been run sucessfully on Outlook for many years.
Outlook has been a centerpiece along with the trusty 11 year old LG Envy3 with customer lists.
Verizon is not going to continue to support the EV3 in the near future.
The Outlook connects to a Time warner Roadrunner account that soup has had since 1987. This is legacy stuff here.
Spectrum has taken over time warner and email is a red-headed stepchild. It doesn't really work. It takes half hour to many hours to receive emails sent to the accounts.
Soup has just discovered not only doesn't it work, but this version of outlook does not download the email files but instead works with them in the cloud. Bad stuff here.
Chickensoup is thinking that this is time for a complete overhaul of devices.
Chickensoup would like a private email that downloads onto the computer.
Chickensoup would like a computer that works well and fast. And is durable, this computer is cheesy. The soup actually takes the computer to work and other places. It has a 17 inch screen.
Chickensoup suspects she is going to have to find a Smart phone and have it all work togehter.
Privately.
Chickensoup is anti-google and anti-cloud.
Chickensoup would be happy to pay a place of her own.
Questions are 1) who do I hire to help me with this, I need someone with telephony skills and computer knowlege, and email skills. If that someone could set up a VPN I would be happy, God knows, I couldnt do it.
and 2) How can I get privacy and independence yet have them tie together.
Am I asking for too much?
Gratefully,
chickensoup
soup is sad that you dont like it.
So is Bongo.
Well, if Bongo is sad, never mind. Forget I brought it up. Carry on.
that is what I need, a pretty techie person who can do it all or most. a comptuer geek who also is a phone geek and is able to pull together the best OS and email providers so I can function pretty seamlessly. and not in the cloud.
Is there a certain kind of person who can do that?
Bongo Fury
If you want all your devices to play together from anywhere, refer again to #17 and #29. That is all.
I just laugh when I hear someone talking about Geek Squad.
Take a quick gander at the outgoing server, too.

#32 and 36 I use Thunderbird and I had problems to but it turns out I did not have the correct server settings.
I do now and it is fast. Example I just sent a 8mb test with a photo and I got it right away.
I use Lunarpages https://www.lunarpages.com to host my site and they have pretty good support and walkthru’s.
#44 It looks like Bongo drinks a lot : )
I never used Outlook, but I used Outlook Express years ago and loved it. I moved on to Windows Live Mail when Windows 7 dropped Outlook Express. Live Mail was very similar to Outlook Express. I liked using Live Mail just fine.
Last December, I had to get a new laptop and reluctantly started using Windows 10 Pro. It took me about a week to get it set up just the way I wanted... I’m very particular about such things. I tweaked it to my liking and turned off all of the tracking/spying/invasive settings I could find... it is everywhere on Win 10. Now, I am very happy using Win10 Pro, but not with the Edge browser; I use Firefox. (I’d be happier if I could remain on Win7 Pro, but not to be.)
I was desperate to find a good email program and I did! It is OEClassic. It is so close to Outlook Express and I love it. It is POP based. I set up the program to keep all mail on my mail server and I download all mail to each of my computers... where it stays until I choose to delete it from each device. OEClassic offers a free version, but I paid for my version. I don’t recall the difference in paid and free, but take a look at their web site. They are quick to respond to any questions. I have used it since last Dec and I am more than pleased with the performance... no complaints!
My new laptop is by the resurrected VAIO. Sony used to make the VAIO, but they got out of the business a few years ago. The VAIO laptops are now made in Japan by engineers that were formerly at Sony. There don’t load any bloatware or proprietary software on the laptops. I have used this new VAIO since last December... love it!! I caution that the VAIO’s are generally for those who don’t require a lot of assistance, they don’t have HELP lines set up as do others like Dell, etc. You leave a message and they’ll return your call to offer assistance. So far, I have not needed help.
I wish you good luck in finding what you seek.
thank you for all your informaion, I will look into it. The viao was my best laptop. If they have resurected it, it is a good day. I will search for it now.
huh? Ya lost me- I’ve had to reinstall windows a couple of times, and of course the mail too- and it does it every time- so it’s definitely something with Thunderbird- My outlook express was fine- bt of course they don’t have hat anymore- so had to get thunderbird-
Someone mentioned it could be the way Thunderbird scans attachments or something- but my goodness- 5-6 minutes to scan and download small photos?
In Options/Account Settings/Server Settings, what’s your inbound server (downloading server)?
Sux about Outlook Express. :-(
hmm- all I’ve got is account settings- can’t find inbound server- i see outbound server which is mail.twc.com
Thanks, I’ve been through most of those before- I finally just gave up and live with hte issue now- Yeah, outlook express was simple, easy- quick- but i guess too many people used and liked it so they dropped it lol
Oh- forgot to mention, I have the problem in both linux and windows- as i dual boot- and have thunderbird on both os’s
oh, two other important things i forgot to mention- in my linux os- I tried the linux email ‘evolution’ i think it was- and it worked fine, but i didn’t like other features of the email- so i went back to thunderbird
Also- in thunderbird, I experience the dreaded issue of the program stalling when “Copying message to Sent Folder”- I tried many suggestions I found online, but nothing helped- not even a little-
I dunno- I’d love thunderbird if it wasn’t for the downloading photos videos and larger messages issues- but unfortunately is bogs down a lot- it works, eventually- but it’s annoying- I can bypass the Hanging issue when “Copying to sent folder” by repeatedly clicking ‘try again’ -after about 4 tries, it completes- (maybe by that time, it has finally done doing what it’s supposed to do, and clicking the ‘retry’ has nothing to do with getting it to complete- but if i don’t click those, it just stalls and won’t complete at all sometimes-
oh well- dunno why windows dropped outlook express- was a nice little program- maybe they had security issues or something-
not to bug ya about this- but just a followup to the ‘copying to sent folder’ issue-
i -MIGHT- have found a solution, but it’s early to tell yet- but -SEEMS- to be working so far- chose to start thunderbird with ad-ons disabled- not sure what adons thunderbird uses, because I have never installed ny myself- hopefully it’s not disabling something important- but so far it seems to save to sent folder without stalling now- we’ll see if it continues-
