Its 7:20 p.m. when he rolls into Spicy Bite, one of the newest restaurants here in rural northwest New Mexico.
Locals in Milan, a town of 3,321, have barely heard of it.
The building is small, single-story, built of corrugated metal sheets. There are seats for 20. The only advertising is spray-painted on concrete roadblocks in English and Punjabi. Next door is a diner and gas station; the county jail is across the road.
Palwinder Singh orders creamy black lentils, chicken curry and roti, finishing it off with chai and cardamom rice pudding. After 13 hours on and off the road in his semi truck, he leans back in a booth as a Bollywood music video plays on TV.
This is like home, says Pal, the name he uses on the road (said like Paul).
There are 3.5 million truckers in the United States. California has 138,000, the second-most after Texas. Nearly half of those in California are immigrants, most from Mexico or Central America. But as drivers age toward retirement the average American trucker is 55 and a shortage grows, Sikh immigrants and their kids are increasingly taking up the job.
Estimates of the number of Sikh truckers vary. In California alone, tens of thousands of truckers trace their heritage to India. The state is home to half of the Sikhs in the U.S. members of a monotheistic faith with origins in 15th century India whose followers are best recognized by the uncut hair and turbans many men wear. At Sikh temples in Sacramento, Fresno, Bakersfield and Riverside, the majority of worshipers are truck drivers and their families.

You’ll like Saffron Road...just enough “kick” to it. Great idea about adding a bit of broth and fresh veggies. We are now in summer salad days. The farmer’s market and fresh sugar snap peas two weeks ago...the first harvest of the season. Were those good! Getting good cantaloupes now, too.
Very tough work but very good pay if you get the right gig.

Sikh flash mob dancing in London...this is a hoot. . I’d most certainly jump right in and give it a try.
My late mother was an RN. Many long years ago, long before she died I had warts on my neck. My mother was an Operating Room nurse at the local hospital in the town grew up in and she got friendly with one of the surgeons who was a Sikh. He removed the warts for no charge. Sikhs are indeed a good people. They have a history of fighting ‘’the good fight’’. In that regard they are a formidable fighting people.
Muslims are sh!t scared of Sikhs.
I dont want automation. Or self driving trucks. That is all.
They are fierce fighters
They are indeed.
Freepers are so daft
You forgot (or left out) the fact that many, if not most, wannabe drivers can’t pass the piss test. I KNOW THIS FOR A FACT. I audited a major trucking company here in PA that pulled out the names of 250 people sent to labs for testing. Only 15 passed in two years. It HAS to be worse now, 20 years later.
Sikhs are a true warrior class.
Within about 10 years, driverless trucks and cars will soon decimate the need for drivers.
The stupid is strong with you.
Yes, but did you read the article? Sikhs from India are coming in at the southern border, claiming asylum because of religious persecution (ridiculous) in India.
Sikhs are conservative like us and vote with us. You would like one as a neighbor. Sikhs are the best India has to offer.
Funny fact. Dream job for a Hindu Indiana is to own a HOJO. For a Sikh it is to be a proctologist.
I just finished watching “21 Sarfarosh - Saragarhi 1897”. It’s available on Netflix and Youtube. It is based on the real life Battle of Saragarhi, fought between 21 Sikh soldiers of the British Indian Army and 10,000 Muslim Pashtun Orakzai tribesmen.
If the Sikhs of today are anything like the Sikhs of yesteryear, I would welcome them into my neighborhood.

Thanks, Alice in Wonderland. I clicked on the link, saw that it was less than 24 minutes long and thought, this will be short time well spent. Turns out this was the first of 65 episodes. Now I’m into episode 3. Only 62 more to go. Sigh. So much to learn, so little time. God bless you and your family.
Americans should be doing these jobs. I know that Sikhs do many things right when they come here, but our nation needs to have American citizens doing these jobs.
Thomas Jefferson commented that merchants respect no borders. Americans want to buy junk cheaply, forgoing quality and supporting their own Nation. Welcome to “The End”.
What part of "...and our posterity" from the Constitution (not India's posterity) don't you understand?
