Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer, is leaving the company, Apple announced on Thursday.

Apple stock dropped 1% on the news in after-hours trading.

Ive is considered one of the most important people at Apple, responsible for the industrial design and the look and feel of all major Apple products, including the iPhone and the Mac. He had worked at Apple for more than 20 years.

I have to admit, I like the way Apple products look.

All along. All the best.

Even Dieter Rams had to lean Braun eventually.

Goodness knows Apple has been milking the same look for 19 years at this point.

Well, as long as it’s not Sir Johnathan Paul George Ringo Jacob Jingleheimer Smith ....

because that would be silly. :P

I agree, anyone who uses Smith as a name is faking their identity. Therefore the rest of the name is suspect.

I’m pretty impressed. Most company CEOs wouldn’t have that much impact if they left. Many would cause the stock to go UP. Pretty influential for a technical guy.

Given the lack of any real design innovation from Apple for the past few years, methinks Jony left the building quite a while ago.

(And all I use is Apple, so I’m not knocking - just hoping that they get off their butts and creating something interesting again.)

I'm still an Apple fan but it hasn't been the same since Steve Jobs passed on. Tim Cook has been a train wreck as CEO, more interested in social justice crap than the business he was hired to run. Yes, Apple is still literally printing money but that's mostly with products that were developed under Steve Jobs' reign.

Jobs set them up pretty nicely for a long run.

Maybe Ives is moving on because he feels that Apple now has their best days behind them.

I like the skeuomorphic look in icons and interface, and Ive dumped it in favor of the Romper Room scheme we have now.

Agree. I still use Apple products, but most of the innovations were completed when Jobs died. Since then, some of the ideas have been puzzling.

Just a couple I've noticed. The mouse has to be plugged in to recharge, and the plug is on the bottom, so you can't use it while it's charging, and it doesn't give you a warning until you're about 20 minutes from losing power. You either have to have a backup mouse or take a couple of hours off while the battery charges.

On the iPad with the Apple pencil, you can charge the pencil by plugging it into the pad, but it seems like the best time to charge the pencil is when you're traveling, but you can't have it plugged in while it's in your carry bag, cause it sticks straight out the bottom.

After Windows came out with their new combination keyboard/stand for their tablets, Apple did a "Me Too!" combo. When was the last time Apple was stealing ideas from Microsoft.

I still think overall, they're better computers, but design leaders now? Not really.

I agree with that. I had a 2011 MacBook Pro that I recently upgraded (nearly 10 years of service!)

I finally upgraded this year and was disappointed that they did away with the MagSafe charger. Now that was a thing of beauty. When you wanted to charge your laptop, the connector magnetically connected and if you accidentally got snagged in the cord, it would easily come away without bringing the laptop crashing to the floor with it.

Now it is back to a standard connector. Why?

Steve Jobs would never have allowed that to happen.
