The force from earthquakes begins with deep earthquakes which come from inside the earth. Then, like a river, it travels along the earth’s plate boundaries. Most of the force which enters California comes from the west Pacific, traveling north then east to the southern coast of Alaska, then south along the Canadian west coast and then south along the U.S. west coast.
When this force arrives in Southern California it is usually dispersed through small earthquakes in that area or by continuing to travel, often along the North American plate boundary resulting in a series of small quakes in Oklahoma, Texas and other states closer to the eastern coast.
When the force becomes congested and isn’t released it builds. This is happening in Southern California right now. If we start to see more quakes happening as the accumulated force follows the plate boundary, that’s good for California because any quake which they have will have been lessened by the release of some of that accumulated force.
The problem now is that there seems to be a bottle-neck and it’s only building in California and only a small amount is dispersing.
There have been a few small earthquakes in Oklahoma and in the Dallas area, but not nearly enough to represent the substantial release which would prevent a large release/earthquake in Southern California.
