WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he aborted a military strike on Iran because he it could have killed 150 people, a disproportionate response to Tehran’s downing of an unmanned U.S. surveillance drone.Trump said the plan was to hit three sites in response to the drone’s downing on Thursday, which Tehran said took place over its territory and which Washington said occurred in international airspace over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The drone incident aggravated fears of a direct military clash between the longtime foes and oil prices rose about $1 per barrel to above $65.50 on Friday due to worries about possible disruptions to crude exports from the Gulf.

Iran is factionalized. Trump can now negotiate with those who applaud his actions and let them deal with the others.

I don’t want a war with Iran. Something nice and deniable might be appropriate. Say, a Russian drone which drops Russian cluster weapons on Iran’s biggest oil Refinery?

If it doesn’t work, no big deal as it cannot be tied to us (if done properly). If it does work, a big headache for Iran and again, cannot be tied to us.

I am related to several, and am personal friends with many more. without fail, they are proud of their service and the mission they fulfilled. so are their families.

(a) you’re being ridiculously dramatic, (b) you sound like beto o’rourke right now, (c) I am ashamed of how many conservatives have flipped positions on the WoT because of two decades of constant MSM propaganda — and that is simply undeniable; the WoT had an approval rate of 90-odd percent when it commenced. (d) people need to grow a pair.

20 years from now, the same people that have flipped on the WoT will be saying they supported impeaching trump. mark it down; it will happen. it’s caused by the same lack of conviction.

I stopped supporting Bush when he behaved like a coward. He didn’t stand up for those men, he curled up into a ball and let the media beat him to death.

Of coarse they are proud of their service they should be, that doesn’t change the fact that they were betrayed by their leaders, and riding bikes with them or painting pictures of them is not the same as abandoning them. We supported Afghanistan. The horse soldiers at the beginning showed what our warriors could do. We could have won that war and been out of that hell hole if we hadn’t turned it into a conventional war we couldn’t win and opened another front in Iraq. Want to tell me again when Al Quida was in Baghdad?.

"Want to ask all our wounded warriors if the Bush doctrine is no longer valid? Lots of arm, legs, eyes, fatherless and motherless children, lots of other wounds that will never heal. For what?"

I admit I was for the US taking out Hussein's WMD, which proved wrong. I've always wondered how that narrative got started. The entire western world believed it (including Hillary and other Dims)and wanted those weapons eradicated. I doubt Bush came up with up it. Who started it? American or foreign intel agencies? media? Who fed Bush such bad intel?

Of course, I was wrong like everyone else and wish we hadn't caused the void of Hussein for ISIS to form and all the worthless loss of lives and limbs mostly caused by them. I am as guilty as anyone for buying into the WMD falsehood. However, I still wonder about those surveillance photos of numerous truck caravans heading to Syria just prior to the invasion.

Iranian people are predominantly not to blame...once that odious regime is kicked to the curb and sensible thinking people take over, we could be like the Japan/USA relationship....or Vietnam/USA.....

you seem to be conveniently (intentionally?) forgetting that BHO spent his entire first term meticulously and methodically unwinning the iraq war — which was a clear win when he took office.

so, if that’s your beef, you’re blaming the wrong guy, and I am supremely confident that you’re doing it because you have swallowed the MSM propaganda. hating on GWB is certainly the safe play on FR, though. lazy, historically ignorant, and mindless, but safe.

Just imagine the press reaction if Trump ordered air strikes that killed 150 mostly civilians, and of course all the “innocent women and children,” in retaliation for downing an unmanned drone.

How smart is it to announce you’re going to hit someone then do it? You wait till their guard is down. Duh!

Better to do something quietly that takes out 150+ of the ruling clique in a way that maintains the facade of deniability. Most Iranians would cheer. Let’s just wait and see.

“Trump says he aborted retaliatory strike to spare Iranian lives”

Democrats will find a way to badmouth him for this, too. Just because.

“”Why did the “how many people will this kill” question not come up until 10 minutes before the strike?””

It apparently did - was known at the time everyone was meeting to go over the plan. It was not last minute. Every news channel is reporting that today and I think the president goofed but no one here wants to admit that. I don’t care how many here like or dislike the president, when he’s wrong, he’s wrong and I think this was a major boo-boo on his part and I’m sure there are those who were in on the planning who would like to come forward and tell the truth. Someone this morning - forget which report I heard, said that this would have been one of the first topics covered and answered before any plans were put into place.
I don’t see why conservatives insist on covering things up when reality is in plain sight. No one can truthfully say that the president doesn’t stretch the truth!

We have assets over there already, so any of the plans for attacks/strikes were probably just 10 minutes from approval to execution. Besides, this public discussion could just be to rattle the Iranians and confuse them. There is likely much we don’t know about whats going on.
