We’re talking old old. Back in 89 I went to a McDs in Sunnyside Queens when the registers went out. Such was the skill of the staff that even when the mgr told the staff to round to the nearest zero and forgo sales tax, he still had to go across the street to Radio Shack and buy ten calculators for his staff. So the lack of register skill goes back aways.

.....and could count your change back to you! Now the register tells them how much to give you in change, and they just hand you a wad of money. The only way to assure yourself it’s the correct change is to stand there and count it yourself....which I never do, out of courtesy for whoever is behind me in line.

It’s happened before to Target back in 2012.

They also have had a major data breach too.

Had to get a new debt card.

Target has gone to the dogs. They only stock what ‘they say’ sells. Walmart is about as bad. Stores getting their own brand on merchandize REALLY sucks. Esp. foods/ OTC medicine. We don’t know where it’s coming from. I like some Brands and refuse to buy other Brands. What the hell!!!

No abacus?

I recall Taiwan ~1971, going into a store, new white cash registers with blue Nixie displays, they would ring it up then show you on the abacus, that the total was correct.

I certainly would not have been one of the customers. I stopped when they made their hard left turn.

Around that time (’89 or ‘90 ), I was driving through Kingston Arizona and stopped at a Taco Bell for a late night snack.

I paid with a $20... and they didn’t have enough change. After the cashier and the manager had some discussion and went through their purses to see if they could make change, the manager took my $20 and went to the neighboring establishments in search of smaller bills. After ten minutes, I dug through all my pockets, my glove compartment etc, and found enough money to pay the exact amount.

But then the cashier said that there was no way to re-do the transaction; She couldn’t just take the right amount and give me $20.00 back. She actually thought I was trying to cheat them out of the food and the money.

After about 25 minutes the manager came back with smaller bills, made change, and I was finally able to go on my merry way. Of course my food was cold by then.

I was traveling through there several times a month in those days... guess where I never stopped again?

Similar issue at Home Depot the other day. They couldn’t take credit cards for a couple hours. I know it was at least regional and heard someone say it was national.

“could make change without a computer”

A teenager working at a fast food store waited on me when that function of their system went kaflooey. All the other dolts at registers stood there with their mouths hanging open. I was in his line. He checked me out, counting out my change without missing a beat. I asked, “Home schooled?” He said, “Yes.”

Haven’t shopped there in years and years. Poor quality merchandise and dirty stores and then there’s their leftist leanings and lgbtwhateverxyz.

Heh, Good for him. Good for his parents.

My Mom taught me how to make change, ‘count it back’ properly, when I was about 8 years old and embarking on my first business venture... A Kool-aid / Lemonade stand.

As it turned out, it was a wasted effort; My only customer for two days was my Dad, and he let me keep the change.....
Which almost covered the amount I had to pay Mom back for the ingredients that she ‘fronted’ to me.

After a bad experience with leftover defective merchandise and Target’s indifference (yes the store manager) I try to shop there as little as possible.

I don’t think I’ve set foot in a Target in 3 years. Perhaps more.
