After Cleveland police officers arrested Gregory L. Johnson in 2016 as he burned an American flag outside the Republican National Convention, Mr. Johnson sued the city, saying the officers had violated his First Amendment rights.
This week, three decades after the court invalidated prohibitions on flag desecration in 48 states, the city of Cleveland agreed to pay Mr. Johnson $225,000 to settle his claim that officers had retaliated against him for an exercise of free expression.

Yep, but it would put into stark contrast the hypocrisy of the left and the so called “love” of the gays. Because if burning a rainbow flag of no nation and no ideology is hate speech then so is burning the US flag
Insanity is everywhere these days.
Immediate death penalty sooner or later.
If burning a cross is a hate crime, then burning an American flag should be also.
And yet if I were to burn a gay flag it would be a hate crime. The solution to flag burners is throwing more gas at the burner.
There is no right to “free expression.”
The court can say what they want, but this is not right to desicrate the flag, a symbol to all people of what this country stands for. With their decision, which I disagree with on the basis of the fact that this act is not speech, they are rewarding creeps who are without the spirit this country is built on, and allowing them to desicrate this symbol. Let us see what happens with the court when people start burning the rainbow flag.
Unless done for insurance reimbursement.
Remember other states that passed similar laws. Only the Liberal cities could enforce the law. anti-gun measures are ignored by the people everywhere else.
And you cannot refuse to publish a message on a cake that denies your own 1A religious rights.
SCOTUS refuses to stand fully for the 1A when it really matters; they hide behind narrow rulings.

Cleveland isn’t paying ANYTHING.
The taxpayers are paying.
When giving instructions to the jury, they should be reminded that in order to pay ANY damages by the ‘government’, your taxes will either go up or ‘services’ may be lessened in order to meet the cash payout.
Can see a lot of city ‘guilty’ with a payout of a buck.
Or, better yet, if a city employee is named in the suit, he/she/it should be liable for the payout— Especially in cases of assault or personal injury etc to the complainant.
