WMAL-AM To Go ESPN Sports - 6/13 - Cumulus says it will flip 630, WMAL-AM, to a sports talk format as of July 1. It will be known as ESPN 630. The news talk formet now on 630 will remain on WMAL-FM, 105.9.
The new 630 format will feature a batch of ESPN programming, including Mike Golic and Trey Wingo in mornings and Stephen A. Smith in middays. The AMer will continue to carry the Washington Redskins, along with its FM sister. No word on whether Radio One's WTEM, The Team 980, will also be carrying the Redskins this upcoming season. It was sold by team owner Dan Snyder's Red Zebra Broadcasting to Radio One last year. If WTEM sticks with sports, the DC market will now have three English language sports talkers, including format ratings leader 106.7 The Fan, WJFK, which is owned by Entercom.....
Fred Grandy and Security Chief Garibaldi from Babylon 5 were much better morning hosts than Chris Plante.
I'm old so it doesn't make a difference to me, but all of my grand kids were exposed to Rush, Sean etal, during our rides for years.
They are all conservative adults and the exposure to conservative talk radio was part of their growing up {along with conservative parents and grand parents on both sides}.
Young people are being exposed to liberal bullshit and they believe what they are taught, and what their piers repeat.
SAD.
anyone know the name of call bock app Rush plugged 10 minutes before the coe of show today?
I regret never hearing the Jerry Doyle show
Garibaldi was one of my favorite B5 people.
WCBM is the best.
Very stupid idea. Most of the listeners on the Maryland side can’t get 105.9, as it comes from Woodbridge, VA and it’s crowded out by 105.7 from Bawlmore.
DC already has two sports stations, WTEM 980 and WJFK 106.7 (which has a similar problem in parts of Maryland, as Baltimore also has a station at 106.5.)
Cumulus just sold 107.3 FM, WRQX Mix 107.3, a strong signal. They would hve been better served to sell 105.9 and move WMAL-FM to 106.7.
And this has been tried before in DC . AM 570 was a talk station, WTNT, then abandoned talk to become a sports station. Guess what it is now? A talk station. It’s Sean Hannity’s DC affiliate.
Somebody is going to start up a talk station and have success with it, and ESPN 630 is going to be a failure. And the morons at Cumulus will probably double down.
Then they’ll go to a talk format, but it may be too late by then.
Was sad to see WGMS 103.5 get turned into sports radio too. I used to listen to that station all the time and I miss those radio personalities. I sometimes wonder what Dennis Owens, Diana Hollender and the others are up to now.
I was too, but it was a deal that was struck when WETA reverted to classical music.
Someone ought to buy WTEM and turn it to talk. Find out when Rush’s and Mark’s contracts with WMAL run out (maybe Plante’s too) and go get them. Fill with other quality shows.
You can also pick up 930 from Frederick at least as far south as Elkridge.
Unfortunately, WCBM ha a longstanding local show that pre-empts the first hour of Levin.
See if you can get WCBM 680.
WCBM was better when Tom Marr was still alive.
We just got the ESPN/conservative talk switcharoo here in Jacksonville, FL. The ESPN station runs national programing all day and one local show during prime time. From what little I have heard of his show it’s pretty easy to tell Steven Smith is a race baiting dirtbag.
Maryland "Freak State" PING!
I like Bruce Elliott.
Shawn and Frank are good and what they do works for morning drive.
But you’re right, Tom Marr was excellent.
Really?!!
This is a shame. WMAL was my preferred station when i am in the Dee Cee area.
Listening via their website, too...and Joe DeGenova is on at 7:05 every Monday morning - always good to hear him.
Good to know for the few times Im primarily near DC instead of Baltimore. I have it saved but now might recall why its not what I expect.
