Today’s Cryptogram

You can find this little fun word game, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications.
The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).
Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated.
PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and any tips you might give the group on how you solve these puzzles as puzzle solvers love to hear how you made out.

Slow. I should have gotten it when I got the first letter of the author's last name. I pass his home every day on my commute. I was operated on on June 3rd in a [spoiler alert!] hospital in his home town that is not named after him, but someone else with the same last name who donated the land.
Hip replacement surgery, if you're curious.

Okay, that was unusual for me: I took a guess on the A and E, and then I recognized the name instantly. One of my favorites!

Got VERY lucky and my first guess at 3 names just happened to be correct and if I hadn’t taken time to congratulate myself...etc....etc...
