FULL TITLE: Teachers from two Chicago schools 'bullied a special-needs student, 11, relentlessly, calling him "stupid" and "dirty," before he attempted to hang himself and was left with permanent brain damage,' lawsuit claims
Teachers from two elementary schools in Chicago relentlessly bullied an 11-year-old boy with special needs, calling him names and even physically assaulting him, before he attempted to take his own life, according to a lawsuit filed by the child's mother.
Jamari Dent in February tried to hang himself in his bedroom after suffering for more than a year at the hands of both his classmates and teachers, his mother, Teirra Black, said during a press conference on Tuesday.
Medics were able to save the boy's life, but his suicide attempt left him with permanent brain damage.
Black said more than five months later, her 11-year-old remains hospitalized and continues to rely on a ventilator to breath.
Black posted a photo on her Facebook page in early May showing Jamari laying in his hospital bed staring into space while surrounded by his family members and presents.
According to Black's lawsuit, her son was subjected to bullying by students and teachers at two separate schools: Medgar Evers and Carter Woodson elementary school over the span of a year, reported ABC News.
The complaint, which names individuals teachers as well as the Chicago Board of Education, claims that Jamari was being called names like 'stupid, 'dumb' and 'retarded.
One time, a teacher at Evers Elementary allegedly called the boy, who is black, 'dirty' and 'nappy-headed,' and asked him if his 'brillo hair was the reason he couldn't read,' drawing peals of laughter from his classmates, the lawsuit claims.

Those two teachers should be jailed for life.
Typical urban ed school product.
I’m betting the teachers are black, and that this will get dropped by the media soon.
You just read a completely one-sided set of allegations and hearsay contained in a large $$ amount seeking lawsuit.
How much is true? At this point, there is no way to know.
... on the charge of conspiracy to commit murder.
When I was a kid, my fear of being called stupid was a powerful motivating force that encouraged me not to be worthy of the name.
“Im betting the teachers are black, and that this will get dropped by the media soon.”
I know they are! Having listened to Tommy Sotomayor for what? 4 years now? I know that is something a black woman might say.
This child was special needs and for some reason could not read or read well. Calling him “stupid” “Retarded” or “dumb” won’t help matters but make the situation worse. A teacher like this should find a new way to teach him to read. Or it may be he can’t learn depending on what his “special needs” are.
Well, since none of the allegations stated in the article mention the ethnicity of the purported abusers/bullies, it would probably be a reasonable assumption ...
Special teachers (not necessarily extra smart, but long on patience, understanding and empathy) are needed to teach special needs students. The shortage is so severe that school districts will often pay premium salaries or bonuses to attract them.
Unfortunately, the extra pay often attracts exactly the wrong kind of people instead.
Homeschool.

Walking into the office, the principle is SCREAMING AT A SMALL KID MAYBE 8?
SCREAMING THAT HE KNOWS AND NEEDS TO SPEAK ENGLISH !!!
Totally uncalled for and wrong.

The Party of Compassion, doing what it does best.
Schools will have a website listing their faculty. Many have photos. Carter Woodson Elementary has no such listing.
